American Road Products Introduces ReverseGUARD Flex System

                 - Patented Safety Product Reduces Accidents
While Vehicles Are In Reverse Motion -

LAS VEGAS, SEMA EXPO, Oct. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- American Road Products, a
leading manufacturer of safety products for the automotive industry, today
unveiled the latest design of its ReverseGUARD(R) product, the patented safety
product designed to reduce reverse-motion accidents. While the original
ReverseGUARD -- Frame System resembles and replaces a standard license plate
frame, the company's latest design is built in an innovative "bar" design,
accommodating a wide range of personal and commercial fleet applications,
including those vehicles that do not utilize a center-mounted license plate.
Like the original frame design, the new ReverseGUARD -- Flex System
accommodates four sensors that use ultrasonic technology to alert the driver
of objects behind the vehicle when it is in reverse. The new product is being
demonstrated this week at the SEMA Expo in Las Vegas in Booth 7534.
"We realized the need for this product when observing the many small- to
mid-size commercial fleet vehicles attempting to navigate a small turnaround
area at our corporate offices," said Bill Porter, CEO of American Road
Products. "Many of these vehicles did not accommodate the center mounted
frame design, thus the ReverseGUARD -- Flex System was created to serve that
market. The product is also ideally suited for those personal vehicles,
including SUV's and vans that utilize an off-center mounted license plate."
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA)
National Center for Statistics and Analysis (NCSA), children aged one through
four represent six percent of the total U.S. population based on 1995 U.S.
census data, but accounted for 30 percent of all nonoccupants killed in
off-road backing crashes. Off-road crashes are those crashes that occur in
locations other than public roads (e.g., private parking lots and residential
driveways). Based on data from NCHS for 1992-1993, an average of 116 children
were fatally injured in off-road backing crashes and an average 390 fatalities
of persons of all ages occur in off-road backing crashes each year. Data from
the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports vehicle damage repair costs
for five MPH low speed rear crashes as high as $5,935 for combined pole and
flat barrier crashes.
"The ReverseGUARD -- Frame System and ReverseGUARD -- Flex System will
support safe driving by both personal and commercial drivers by helping to
reduce the potential for serious backing-related accidents," said Allan
Brooks, president and COO of American Road Products and former insurance
industry executive. "The average personal driver faces a blind spot of
greater than 70 feet behind the backing vehicle. That distance can be much
greater for commercial vehicles with no rearview mirror. That means any
object or person within this blind spot is at risk of being hit by the vehicle
backing up. The ReverseGUARD system can significantly reduce a fleet
manager's exposure to costly property damage and bodily injury losses."

    How it Works
ReverseGUARD automatically activates when a driver puts a vehicle in
reverse gear. Using four ultrasonic sensors built into the frame or flex
system, ReverseGUARD detects persons or objects in the path of the vehicle six
to eight feet from the rear bumper. These sensors alert the driver to the
obstacle by emitting an intermittent alarm inside the vehicle. As the vehicle
moves closer to the object, the alarm alerting the driver sounds more quickly
until a steady alarm is heard, indicating the vehicle is within two feet of
the object.

    Pricing and Availability
ReverseGUARD is competitively priced, providing consumer friendly pricing,
with excellent profit margins to product distributors and authorized
retailers.
