Epicyte Pharmaceutical, Inc. to Present at Red Herring's NDA As 'Best of the Best' in Biotechnology

SAN DIEGO and DANA POINT, Calif., Oct. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Epicyte
Pharmaceutical, Inc.'s CEO Christopher Clement presented today at
Red Herring's NDA conference in Dana Point, CA. The company was among the
"Best of the Best" companies identified by Red Herring in the biotechnology
arena.
Epicyte is developing human monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) for prevention
and treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases, including herpes
simplex virus, respiratory syncytial virus, HIV and Clostridium difficile.
The company's product pipeline of human antibodies is being produced in green
plants using Epicyte's proprietary Plantibody technology. Production of mAbs
in plants is easily scalable through the planting of additional crops and
eliminates the need for large fermentation tanks, which require a large
capital investment. In addition, plants are the only production system that
can economically produce secretory antibodies, which are the antibodies that
naturally prevent disease.
Epicyte's product candidates and other monoclonal antibodies have the
capacity to target and neutralize pathogens, cancer cells or inflammatory
factors with extreme precision. For this reason mAbs have become a major
component of the biotechnology product pipeline; over 400 mAbs are now in
development. The Company's technology provides the capacity for the
production of unlimited quantities of pharmaceutical-grade monoclonal
antibodies for itself and for its partners.
Epicyte will capture value in the near term through the licensing of its
Plantibodies(TM) technology for the production of mAbs outside its pipeline
focus.
The company currently has partnerships with Centocor and Dow Agrosciences
and is negotiating with others. Long term value is being created in its own
product pipeline in the area of prevention and treatment of infectious and
inflammatory disease. By harnessing plants to mass-produce these products,
Epicyte will create new markets for the use of antibodies in the prevention
and treatment of diseases through routine and recurrent application of
antibodies. By focusing on secretory antibodies acting at mucosal surfaces,
Epicyte will capitalize on currently underutilized strengths of antibodies:
75% of all antibodies produced by the human body are secretory, and secretory
antibodies naturally act on mucosal surfaces. Because mucosal surface
diseases (such as HIV, influenza, e coli and others) can occur in all people
at all life stages, Epicyte's technology will enable the company to address
the currently unmet medical needs of large patient populations.
