Starmet Comcast Receives Contracts for Electronic Applications

CONCORD, Mass., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Starmet Corporation
(Nasdaq: STMT), formerly Nuclear Metals, Inc., a Concord, Massachusetts
manufacturer of advanced technology metallurgical products, today announced
that its Comcast subsidiary recently received over $1 million in contracts for
use of its patented Beralcast(R) material in high end computer disk drives.
These contracts call for the manufacture of prototype Beralcast(R) components
which will significantly enhance data processing. Beralcast(R) is 22% lighter
and three times stiffer than aluminum and has excellent vibration damping
characteristics. These attributes provide greater speed and precision in
placement and movement of electronic components. Beralcast(R) has the added
advantage of superior heat transfer which improves information processing
speeds. Mass production of Beralcast(R) computer disk drives is anticipated
within 18 months. The market for this application in high end computer
hardware exceeds 10 million units annually.
These commercial market programs are significant to the Company because
they present early opportunities to enter high volume production with
Beralcast(R). This is in contrast to Starmet's ongoing work in Government
programs such as the Army's RAH-66 Comanche Helicopter, which is not scheduled
to enter high volume production for another 5-6 years.
Starmet Comcast, a wholly owned subsidiary of Starmet Corporation, is a
manufacturer of commercial metal products for electronic, sport and motion
control applications utilizing investment and permanent mold casting
techniques.
