Excitement Builds as Software Development Conference & Expo 2000 Kicks Off in Washington DC

 Live Interview with Kevin Mitnick and the Opening Day of the Expo Highlight
                               Day 3 of SD 2000

    WASHINGTON, Oct. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The Software Development Conference &
Expo 2000 (SD 2000) kicks into full-swing today with a live interview with
convicted computer hacker Kevin Mitnick and the opening of the Expo today at
the Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC SD 2000 runs through
Thursday, November 2.
    SD 2000 is dedicated to providing software developers with a stimulating
environment in which to learn from a faculty of renowned experts, see and work
with the latest development tools from leading companies in the industry and
listen to presentations from some of the brightest lights in the development
world today.
    Among the highlights at SD 2000 today are:

    Kevin Mitnick Speaks; Security Shines
    Mitnick's interview, scheduled to run from 12:15 -1:15 p.m. in the
Ballroom of the Convention Center, will be conducted by John Soat, senior
executive editor of InformationWeek.  Mitnick will delve into the hacker
mindset, offer insight into how companies can best defend against security
attacks, and talk about the exposure for both companies and the enterprises
and consumers they market their software to from computer attacks.
    At 3:30 p.m. today, following Mitnick's interview, SD 2000 hosts a Power
Panel entitled Security and Commerce on the Tangled Web.  Industry leaders and
security experts, moderated by Richard Power of the Computer Security
Institute, will discuss the ins and outs of computer security, the leading
concern facing developers today.

    SD Project
    The SD Project, initiated by technical director Ken Pugh of Pugh-Killeen
Associates, continues today.  Since the opening of the conference, three
active faculty members, along with a team of volunteer developers, have been
involved in a charitable venture working to improve on various pieces of the
Hydrocephalus Association's Web site.  The group has already made tremendous
progress, enhancing registration and request capabilities and upgrading the
visitor database, among other projects.

    Expo
    The SD 2000 Expo kicks off today, giving attendees the chance to talk
face-to-face with visionary tool developers and test new products from
ActiveState, Mainsoft, ParaSoft and TurboPower Software.  Visit returning
exhibitor IBM, back for its 13th year, and stop by the Microsoft .NET Partner
Pavilion to chat with various Microsoft partners.  At 4:30 p.m., attendees are
invited to don their costumes and masks and network with peers at the
Halloween Expo Party.
    In addition to the Expo, industry gurus will teach information-packed
courses and participate in a variety of panel discussions designed to
enlighten and educate attendees about the latest trends in programming
languages, enterprise development, platform tools and Internet tools and
technologies.  SD 2000 provides ample opportunity for the exchange of
knowledge, through power panels, "Birds of a Feather" gatherings, tutorials,
the Expo and parties.

    Wednesday's highlights
    On Wednesday, legislative debate takes center stage with a Power Panel
discussion entitled "Should Government Regulate the Software Industry."
Moderated by Richard Hale Shaw, this Panel will take a look at the roots of
software development and the effect government regulation would have on the
industry.
    Also Wednesday, Dr. Larry M. Augustin, founder, president and CEO of VA
Linux Systems, will discuss the principles, tools and methods of successful
Open Source software development, and how the Open Source development model is
fundamentally changing the way companies realize their strategic business
objectives.  John "Tiberius" Hall, creator of SourceForge, will join Augustin
for the presentation, entitled "Quick, What's Your Open Source Strategy?
Breaking Down the Barriers to Open Source Development" on Wednesday, November
1 at 12:30 p.m.
