biopharmaceutical company dedicated to discovering, developing and

today the appointment of Jerry T. Jackson, former Merck & Co. executive, to
its Board of Directors. Mr. Jackson has more than thirty-five years of
executive experience in the pharmaceutical industry.

Mr. Jackson was employed by Merck & Co., Inc., a major pharmaceutical
company, from 1965 until his retirement in 1995. From 1993 until retirement,
Mr. Jackson served as Executive Vice President of Merck with broad
responsibilities for numerous operating groups -- including being President of
Merck's Worldwide Human Health Division in 1993 and Senior Vice President
responsible for Merck's Specialty Chemicals Business in 1991-1992.
Previously, he was President of Merck's International Division. Mr. Jackson
has served on the board of directors of several biotech pharmaceutical
companies and currently is on the board of Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc.,
Intrabiotics Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and M D Edge, Inc.
