Slow Job Market, Loss of Dependent Status and Termination of School-Sponsored Coverage Can Leave December Graduates Unprotected, Says Fortis Health

         Many December Graduates Gain Diploma, Lose Health Insurance

    MILWAUKEE, Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Many college graduates will find
themselves without health insurance upon graduation in December, either
because of the termination of school-sponsored coverage or because they are no
longer an eligible dependent on their parents' plan.
    But there is a sensible solution for graduates:  short-term medical
insurance.
    "The loss of health insurance may go unnoticed as graduates focus on
landing a job," comments Kathy Clark, market development director for

short-term medical insurance.  "But with many graduates leaving college
already burdened with substantial bills from school loans and credit cards,
maintaining health insurance coverage is essential to avoid further financial
risks."
    Fortis Health cautions this group to explore their options, as the

costs for a broken ankle can range up to $15,000 for someone who is uninsured,

    For example, a 23-year-old healthy male from Georgia can pay as little as
$79.20 for a 60-day coverage period.  A 22-year-old healthy female from
Arizona can pay just $62.40 for a 60-day term.  Coverage may begin as soon as
the next day.
    Often, students rely on newly acquired jobs to fill the void, but
according to a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers,
employers will hire 20-percent fewer new college graduates in 2001-2002 than
in 2000-2001.
    Short Term Medical coverage is designed for generally healthy individuals
in a variety of situations.  It's designed to cover a gap in health insurance
