Spectra Systems Corporation is Awarded Key US Patent Linking Digital and Physical Security with Wireless Connectivity and Portability

PROVIDENCE, R.I., Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Spectra Systems Corporation has
been granted a US patent (US 6,948,068) entitled, "Method and Apparatus for
Reading Digital Watermarks with a Hand-Held Reader Device," which describes
the use of a portable device capable of decoding digital watermarks and a
number of physical security features. This patent provides an important
component for the effective use of security features on passports, driver's
licenses and other identity document solutions in a distributed network, which
includes police and other agents in the field.
"We believe this patent will play an important role in the commerce
associated with effective management and implementation of digital and
physical security solutions for Homeland Security and related applications,"
said Dr. Nabil M. Lawandy, CEO of Spectra Systems.
"This is a key patent for any company pursuing high level identity
solutions using a combination of digital watermarking and physical security
such as holograms or fluorescent features. All such solutions will require
portable devices capable of operating in the field and far from office or
building installations," said Dr. Jian Zhao, CTO, MediaSec Technologies, a
unit of Thomson's Software and Technology Solutions business division.
"We are actively pursuing partnership agreements with major suppliers of
portable wireless devices as well as companies in the digital security space
to commercialize this intellectual property," said Lawandy.
