John Glenn And Other Discovery Astronauts Using GN Netcom, Inc.'s ACS Headsets For Shuttle Communications

ACS Headsets, one of Nashua, NH-based GN Netcom, Inc.'s headset brands,
have been used in every space shuttle mission since the first flight of
Columbia on April 12, 1981.

NASHUA, N.H., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Since the first shuttle flight of
Columbia on April 12, 1981, shuttle crewmembers have used ACS brand headsets
on board for shuttle-to-earth and internal communications. ACS designed and
adapted their traditional operator services headsets according to NASA
specifications for space flight use; they are the only headsets used on
shuttle flights. ACS headsets are a brand of headsets manufactured and sold
by GN Netcom, Inc., a Nashua, NH-based company which acquired ACS Wireless,
Inc. earlier this year.
For communication capability, crew members wear a headset containing a
microphone and earphone, which fits over the crewmember's head, and a
connector and cable interface with the headset interface unit, connected
through communications cables to respective Audio Terminal Units (ATU). The
very lightweight headset is the interface between the leg unit and crewmember.
A single-strand wire headband holds the earphone against the ear and supports
a thin boom holding a noise-canceling microphone near the mouth and a cable
connector to the crewmember's leg unit. The microphone can be positioned to
suit the individual flight crewmember. (For more detailed information on
