MADISON, Wis., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Diabetes Association
today issued the following statement in response to Governor Jim Doyle's veto
of an anti-stem cell research bill (AB499). Bill Domansky, of the
Association's Madison Leadership Council, and Jeff Perzan, Chair of the
Association's Southeast Wisconsin Leadership Council, made the statement for
the Association.
"The American Diabetes Association applauds today's decision by Governor
Doyle to veto a bill that would set stem cell research in Wisconsin back
decades. The American Diabetes Association strongly opposes human
reproductive cloning, and supports a complete ban and stiff penalties for
anyone who breaks such a law. However, therapeutic cloning is not the same as
reproductive cloning and should not be confused as such. By offering
scientific understanding of how stem cells develop, therapeutic cloning offers
great promise and hope in the search for better treatments and a cure for
diabetes.
"Wisconsin has been a leader in breakthrough stem cell research, and
today's action ensures that this research can continue unimpeded. Those of us
who champion the fight to find cures and better treatments for chronic and
deadly diseases thank Governor Doyle for allowing researchers to continue
their important work."
Diabetes is one of this nation's most prevalent, debilitating, deadly and
costly diseases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently
announced that 20.8 million Americans now have diabetes, a 14 percent increase
from 2003, when 18.2 million Americans were reported having the disease.
The American Diabetes Association is the nation's leading voluntary health
organization supporting diabetes research, information and advocacy. The
Association's mission is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives
of all people affected by diabetes. Founded in 1940, the Association provides
service to hundreds of communities across the country.
