CARLSBAD, Calif., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- In a huge global week for
Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY) Staff Professionals and for the Company's clubs and
balls, records were broken and landmarks were established in two tournament
victories. Staff Professional Annika Sorenstam led the way yesterday, winning
for the second consecutive week in Japan. Her victory in the Mizuno Classic
with a 13-under-par total of 203 was her eighth of 2001 and helped her shatter
the LPGA Tour single-season money record set last year by Karrie Webb.
Sorenstam has won $1,990,868 and can break the $2 million mark in two weeks at
the Tyco/ADT Tour Championship.
The victory at the Mizuno Classic was Sorenstam's second straight since
switching to the sensational new Odyssey(R) White Hot(R) "2-Ball" Putter.
"With the '2-Ball' Putter my putting is really excellent," said Sorenstam,
31. "It has really helped me be a steady putter in the six-foot range. I
have not missed a putt within six feet for the past two weeks, and I think
that is how you win tournaments."
Sorenstam's eight LPGA Tour victories this year are the most by any
professional golfer on the world's major tours. Her triumph at the Mizuno
Classic was the 31st of her career, and she has clinched the Rolex Player of
the Year title for the fourth time. This is also Sorenstam's second winning
streak of the year, following her four-win stretch early in the season that
included her record 59 at the Standard Register Ping and the third major
championship of her career at the Nabisco Championship. Sorenstam is the
first golfer since Nancy Lopez in 1979 to win eight times during an LPGA Tour
season, and she already has met all the playing requirements for admission
into the LPGA Hall of Fame.
Sorenstam used 11 Callaway Golf(R) clubs at the Mizuno Classic, including
a Big Bertha(R) Hawk Eye(R) VFT(R) Pro Series Titanium Driver, Steelhead
Plus(R) 4-wood and 7-wood, and Steelhead(TM) X-14(R) Irons, along with a
Callaway Golf ball. Sorenstam hit 14 greens in regulation in the final round
despite strong winds at Musashigaoka Golf Course, and she finished with
birdies on the final two holes to secure her victory. Sorenstam leads the
LPGA Tour in greens hit in regulation (79.8 percent) and scoring average
(69.38) this year.
Callaway Golf Staff Professional Dean Wilson also won in Japan yesterday,
taking the Ube Kosan Open with a 21-under-par total of 267. In his third
victory of the season, Wilson used 12 Callaway Golf clubs, including the
ERC(R) II Forged Titanium Driver, Big Bertha Steelhead Fairway Woods,
Steelhead X-14 Pro Series Irons and an Odyssey White Hot 5 Putter. Wilson
also used Callaway Golf's new CTU 30(TM) Red ball in the win, the first pro
victory for the new golf ball.
