9/11 Widower Files to Join German Criminal Trial of Alleged Conspirator

WASHINGTON, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- A northern Virginia man, whose wife was
killed on the plane that terrorists crashed into the Pentagon, today filed in
a German federal court to become a co-plaintiff in the criminal trial of
Mounir El Motassadeq, a Moroccan student accused of supporting the Qaeda cell
in Hamburg that played a central role in the Sept. 11 attacks.
Under German law, a co-plaintiff has many of the same privileges as the
prosecutor. For example, a co-plaintiff's attorney can question witnesses and
recommend sentencing. A co-plaintiff also would have access to a vast amount
of evidence that otherwise would be confidential.
The applicant for co-plaintiff status, Stephen Push of Families of
September 11, has retained Berlin lawyer Andreas Schulz as his attorney in the
case. The trial is under way at the Hanseatic Regional Appeal Court
(Hanseatisches Oberlandesgericht) in Hamburg.

Families of September 11 is a non-profit organization dedicated to
promoting the interests of families of victims of the Sept. 11 attacks and
advocating public policies that improve prevention of and response to
terrorist attacks. The organization represents approximately 1,200 Sept. 11
families.
