WALTHAM, Mass., Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- AltaRex Corp. (AXO.TO, ALXFF.OTC),
a developer of foreign antibodies that activate the immune system to treat
cancer, announced that the data from the Company's OvaRex(R) clinical
development program for the treatment of advanced ovarian cancer are being
presented today at the 19th Annual Chemotherapy Foundation Symposium by
Jonathan Berek, M.D., Chief of the Division of Gynecology and Oncology, UCLA
School of Medicine.

Dr. Berek is a leading researcher in the field of biologic treatments for
gynecologic cancers with a particular interest in those that activate natural
cancer killing capabilities of the human immune system. He is one of the
leading authorities and proponents of immunotherapy for the treatment of
ovarian cancer and has a distinguished career in such research. Dr. Berek is
the co-principal investigator of the Company's lead pivotal 345-patient
OvaRex(R) clinical trial, which is complete for primary analysis pending study
unblinding.
"For those of us who have been involved in immunologic and biologic
research for the past couple of decades, this represents a very exciting time.
I think ovarian cancer ultimately will be one of those cancers where
immunotherapy could be very valuable," comments Dr. Berek. "In large part,
monoclonal antibodies have been disappointing, but the OvaRex(R) antibody has
been well tolerated by patients in the OvaRex(R) clinical trials and takes a
novel approach to activating immunity -- it is one of the most promising
biologics for ovarian cancer patients," added Dr. Berek.
The Company expects to announce the primary results of the lead trial by
year-end, and depending on such results, to file a Biologics License
Application (BLA) with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seeking
approval of OvaRex(R) MAb as treatment for ovarian cancer patients in
remission and as a benign stand-alone and/or consolidation therapy for the
treatment of recurrent disease.
The Chemotherapy Foundation Symposium gathers leading medical oncologists
and hematologists in New York City from around the globe to explore the
significance of new developments and the challenge of broadening therapeutic
options for the management of cancer patients. This year's symposium, titled
Innovative Cancer Therapy for Tomorrow, reports on progress in converting
cancer from a life-threatening disease to a treatable chronic illness.
