BIO President Jim Greenwood's Statement on Election

WASHINGTON, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Biotechnology Industry Organization
(BIO) President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Greenwood today issued the
following statement on the outcome of the 2006 midterm elections and the
anticipated effect on the biotechnology industry:
"BIO congratulates the winners of the 2006 midterm elections. We look
forward to working with Members of the 110th Congress along with governors
and state legislators to develop a policy environment which will ensure the
biotechnology industry can continue to foster the innovation which can lead
us to a world with no hunger, pollution, and disease.
"As we prepare for a new legislative session, policymakers will face
many critical issues including health care, energy, agriculture and
environmental policy. The biotechnology industry is unique in creating
innovative products that can provide cures for debilitating diseases,
improve health care, supply alternative fuel sources, preserve the
environment and help alleviate hunger. We will work with federal and state
lawmakers to ensure legislators recognize the benefits of biotechnology and
pursue a legislative agenda that promotes innovation.
"These are not partisan issues. Biotechnology benefits us all. There is
much we can accomplish by working together across both sides of the
political aisle. As the 110th Congress convenes, we will continue to work
with Democrats and Republicans on critical issues such as strengthening the
Food and Drug Administration, the development of alternative fuels,
embryonic stem cell research and other issues which allow biotechnology to
fulfill its promise of a better world."
BIO represents more than 1,100 biotechnology companies, academic
institutions, state biotechnology centers and related organizations across
the United States and 31 other nations. BIO members are involved in the
research and development of healthcare, agricultural, industrial and
