GreatOutdoors.com is Online Link to the Great Outdoors
AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The original programming and
distribution power of the country's only 24-hour outdoor cable network, and
the Internet resources of one of the largest media companies in the nation,
have combined to create a sophisticated new Web site devoted to outdoor
lifestyle sports.
GreatOutdoors.com offers original Web-only content about outdoor gear,
travel, technique, nutrition, and fitness for outdoor adventure sports and
expeditions.
"The Web site will be a one-stop resource for fact gathering, booking
travel, sharing outdoor experiences and interacting with a passionate
community of outdoor enthusiasts," said Betsy Brunton, brand manager for
GreatOutdoors.com
The new site was announced jointly by Peter Winter, president of Cox
Interactive Media (CIM), Atlanta, and Roger Werner, chief executive officer,
Outdoor Life Network (OLN), Stamford, Conn.
"We are building this site to satisfy the intense interest in the outdoor
lifestyle," commented Werner, "It's a perfect time to capitalize on that
enthusiasm."
Outdoor Life Network is the only 24-hour cable network devoted to outdoor
adventure and the natural world.
Peter Winter, president, CIM, expressed his excitement about the Internet
distribution that his company brings to the partnership, "We have built the
largest network of city sites in the country in the past year," he said. "Our
city sites will serve as a powerful distribution network for
GreatOutdoors.com."
Cox Interactive Media, a subsidiary of Cox Enterprises, Inc., is the
largest supplier of city and specialty sites in the country. CIM sites are
located in major U.S. markets where Cox operates its newspapers, television
and radio stations, and cable clusters.
Through this new association, GreatOutdoors.com will become the definitive
online source for outdoor enthusiasts. Users will find a wealth of original
programming, live competition coverage, environmental news, live updates from
explorers in the far reaches of the globe, and detailed reviews of new gear.
Best of all, there will be plenty of opportunities to interact and react.
The site features dynamic tutorials in rich, multi-media format, taking
personal instruction on the Web to a new level. Users will learn how to sail
from America's Cup navigator Peter Isler, how to get in shape for the ski
season from former U.S. Ski Team member Pam Fletcher, and how to minimize
energy loss on mountain biking trails from the winningest cyclist in U.S.
history, Davis Phinney.
Previously, CIM produced GoWest, the year-round Web site devoted to human-
powered recreation in 11 Western states, Alaska, British Columbia, and
Alberta. "We're taking the best from GoWest and the OLN to create more than
an online magazine. This will be a true outdoor community drawn together by
the immediacy of the Internet", according to Brunton.
GreatOutdoors.com has developed relationships with established sport-
specific brands to help broaden the scope and depth of the site. Inside
Communications, Inc., of Boulder, Colorado, publisher of VeloNews: The Journal
of Competitive Cycling, and Inside Triathlon is one example. The best
editorial from these publications will be bolstered by OLN's audio and video
capabilities giving users a closer view of the sports they love with an added
level of interactivity that the medium has long promised but has only begun to
deliver.
Specific features of GreatOutdoors.com include:
-- Coverage of skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, cycling, hiking,
surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, rock climbing, fly-fishing and
triathlons.
-- Weather information from sources such as NOAA and the U.S. Geological
Survey including snow reports, river levels, and coastal tide, wind
and wave data.
-- Exclusive RealAudio coverage of FIS World Cup Skiing.
-- VeloNews coverage of international cycling classics like the Tour de
France, Giro d'Italia, and Paris-Roubaix combined with OLN video of
the events. VeloNews also brings coverage of national and
international mountain bike race series and world championships.
-- Same-day updates from major events on the triathlon schedule will be
provided by Inside Triathlon, along with reports from top duathlons
and the growing number of mountain bike triathlons.
-- Outdoor equipment reviews and information from offbeat veteran
gearheads Bob Woodward, Jackson Hogan and Paul Kirwin at "gearOrama".
-- OLN Adventure Quest expeditions, with live components, directly from
the four corners of the world.
GreatOutdoors.com will deliver to advertisers a highly targeted audience
of affluent, outdoor enthusiasts who will visit often. Unlike seasonal
outdoor sites on the Web, GreatOutdoors.Com will be active 12 months a year.
