Raytheon Wins Canadian Competitive Paveway II Contracts Worth $17 Million

TUCSON, Ariz., Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has
been awarded two separate competitive contracts worth a total of $17 million
for Paveway II Laser Guided Bomb (LGB) components by the Canadian Department
of National Defence (Public Works and Government Services).
Raytheon was awarded an $11.7 million contract on Oct. 29 to manufacture
and deliver more than 1,000 Paveway II Laser Guided Bomb Computer Control
Groups (CCG), field test equipment and load-crew training units for the
Canadian National Defence Forces. Another competitive contract was awarded to
Raytheon in June for $4.9 million on June 7 for the corresponding Paveway II
Airfoil Groups.
The Paveway II LGB system features an onboard guidance system, the CCG,
which detects and guides the unit to a target illuminated by an external laser
source. The CCG samples the reflected laser energy from the target and
corrects its trajectory as it glides, terminating at the target. The Airfoil
Group contains a rear wing assembly that provides aerodynamic stability during
flight.
Raytheon first delivered Paveway Laser Guided Bomb kits to Canada in the
mid-1990s.
"We are delighted to be selected as the winner of this competition and to
be the continued supplier of Laser Guided Bomb hardware to the Canadian
Forces," said Donna Ellington, director of Raytheon's Paveway programs.
"Receiving these contracts validates that Raytheon continues to provide 'best
value' to our customers. We not only intend to provide the best LGB hardware
but will continue to provide the best support."
Since its inception in 1968, the Paveway series of LGBs has revolutionized
tactical air-to-ground warfare. These semi-active laser guided munitions not
only drastically reduce the numbers required to destroy a target, but also
feature accuracy, reliability, and cost-effectiveness previously unattainable
with conventional weapons. The Raytheon CCG configuration to be delivered
under these contracts is upgradeable to the Enhanced Paveway II, which
features dual-mode guidance with both laser and global positioning system
(GPS) capability.
The Paveway II Laser Guided Bomb continues to be the world's premier and
lowest cost air-to-ground weapon system. It is deployed by most North Atlantic
Treaty Organization (NATO) member nations and by countries around the world.
Thirty-two nations worldwide depend on Paveway II for accurate, reliable and
cost-effective target destruction.
During Operation Desert Storm, more than half of air-launched guided
weapons were Paveways (II and III). Paveway II accounted for more than three-
quarters of the total Paveways used. More recently, Paveway II has served the
war fighter in Operation Enduring Freedom, where nearly two-thirds of all
carrier-based ordnance were Paveway Laser Guided Bombs.
"As a defense contractor we build hardware like Paveway II that we hope
serves as a deterrent," said Jon Jones, vice president, Raytheon Missile
Systems Strike Weapons product line. "But when a need arises, we are proud to
continue to provide this reliable and effective weapon system to our neighbor
and ally to the north."
Primary work on these contracts will be performed at Raytheon facilities
in Tucson, Ariz., Sherman, Texas, and Andover, Mass.
With headquarters in Lexington, Mass., Raytheon Company is a global
technology leader in defense, government and commercial electronics, and
business and special mission aircraft.
