SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Federal-Mogul Corporation
recently opened a training center and three satellite learning facilities at
manufacturing locations in Germany for aftermarket employees and customers.
The Technical Training Institute (TTI) is part of an aftermarket initiative
designed to improve learning for Federal-Mogul employees as well as customers,
including distributors, engine rebuilders and sales representatives. The
institute offers three levels of classes and seminars -- from basic to
advanced. The objective is to improve participants' knowledge of products and
their functions, technical issues, warranty and quality issues.

"This is a very exciting development in our effort to increase our own
employees' knowledge and better serve our customers," says TTI Manager Udo
Quambusch. "The TTI is designed to ensure that skills and knowledge keep pace
with the development of products and the manufacturing processes behind them,
as well as the expertise needed to service these products and our customers'
developing requirements."
The Burscheid facility was chosen as the main training facility because it
is centrally located and uses state-of-the-art piston ring production
processes. In order to accommodate as many seminars as possible, three
"satellite" factory-based training centers of the TTI have been established at
Wiesbaden (Bearings), Nuremberg (Pistons) and Herdorf (Gaskets). Burscheid is
located in the middle of the satellite sites, making it possible for
participants in a two-day course to tour the Burscheid manufacturing location
or at least one of the other sites.
The TTI at Burscheid is housed in a recently remodeled area within the
plant. Each month, it is used for several two- to four-day seminars. A
typical seminar includes presentations, videos, guided tours and question-and-
answer sessions. This year, seminars held for Federal-Mogul employees have
focused on the company's broad range of engine parts; seminars for customers
have focused on engine, sealing and chassis parts.
"We always adapt our training to customers' needs," Quambusch said. "If
the audience is engine rebuilders, the material we cover is more technical.
If the audience is sales representatives, the main focus is on sales
strategies."
Next year, the TTI curriculum will be expanded to allow participants to
learn about friction and ignition parts. Classes will be held year-round and
are currently scheduled until the end of January 2004.
"Ratings and responses received so far have confirmed the need for such a
Technical Training Institute and tell us we are serving that need well,"
Quambusch said.
Horst-Volker Becker, sales director, East Europe, says that customer
feedback is very positive. "Customers are impressed by the advanced
technology of our products and plants," Becker said.
Federal-Mogul employees who participate in the seminars agree that the TTI
is a great asset to the company. "Participants benefit from courses but also
enjoy interacting with other Federal-Mogul employees and gaining an
understanding of how their part of the business fits with the company's
overall goals," Quambusch said.
To date, Burscheid is the fourth Federal-Mogul TTI. A state-of-the-art
training center in St. Louis, Missouri, boasts seven classrooms, an engine
machine shop, electronics and ABS diagnostic labs and 11 service bays to
provide a comprehensive experience for trainees. TTIs are also located in
Mexico City, Mexico, and City West, South Africa.
