Pioneer in evidence-based medicine releases biomarker to help detect proteins
associated with Alzheimer's Disease, Down's Syndrome, BSE, and other disorders
DEDHAM, Mass., Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Signet Laboratories, Inc., a
pioneer in evidence-based medicine (EviMed), today announced the availability
of its antibody to Apolipoprotein J (Apo-J), a protein implicated in
neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's Disease, Down's Syndrome and
transimissible spongiform encephalopathies, such as BSE, among others.
Studies have shown that Apo-J, also known as clusterin, plays an important
role as a chaperone for Beta Amyloid protein, a key component in the
pathogenesis of Alzheimer's Disease. Apo-J appears to influence structure and
toxicity of Beta Amyloid, as well as accumulation of Beta Amyloid peptide in
the brain.
"Research has demonstrated that Apo-J is involved in the process of Beta
Amyloid aggregation in vitro and in vivo, but the method by which the
aggregation is affected has remained largely elusive," said Joe Bertelsen,
Neuroscience Product Manager for Signet Laboratories. "Signet's new Apo-J
antibody, in addition to Signet's existing panel of neuroscience antibodies,
gives researchers a powerful tool for gaining valuable insight into the
pathogenesis of Alzheimer's and other neurological diseases."
In addition to its function in neurological disorders, Apo-J is also
implicated in prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, large cell lymphoma and
diabetes.

Evidence-based medicine is the treatment of diseases prior to their full
manifestation, with the goal of reducing their occurrence and preventing
disease progression by early identification of patients with increased risk
factors.
Drawing on long experience in developing diagnostic assays and antibodies
for disease detection and treatment, Signet's mission is to create novel
diagnostics and drugs for patients at risk for cancer, sepsis and renal
failure (SARF), neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's
and Huntington's, and prion diseases such as "Mad Cow" and vCJD.
