LEXINGTON, MA USA
New Tool in Rational Suite v2002 Automatically Collects Key Life-Cycle Metrics
And Publishes to Entire Team to Collaboratively Manage Software Projects

LEXINGTON, Mass., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Rational Software (Nasdaq: RATL)
today announced Rational(R) ProjectConsole, a new Web-based tool that helps
software development teams save time and improve project predictability and
success.
This new tool in Rational Suite(R) v2002 helps software teams
collaboratively manage projects by automatically collecting software
development data and metrics and dynamically generating a project Web site to
help Rational Suite users understand their project's status. Rational
ProjectConsole is available at no additional cost to all Rational Suite
customers with an active support contract.
Rational ProjectConsole was announced today in conjunction with Rational
Suite v2002. Additional information on Rational Suite v2002 is available at:
http://www.rational.com/announcing2002.jsp.
Rational ProjectConsole automatically displays its metrics in a
customizable dashboard--an easy-to-understand, graphical view of project
status that contains such visual measurement devices as gauges, charts and
alerts. The live interface allows users to drill-down into the displayed
metrics, enabling a better understanding of the underlying data and a view of
data correlations. The dashboard is a component of the Rational ProjectConsole
project Web site and can be customized to automatically refresh on demand or
at scheduled intervals.
Rational ProjectConsole uses software agents to collect and store metrics
in a data warehouse, enabling users to analyze trends over time. It
automatically gathers metrics, such as distribution of total defects and
number of open requirements, from Rational Suite and non-Rational tools,
including Microsoft Project and Microsoft Word, and displays them for all
software developers, other practitioners and project leaders. This enables
all team members to actively monitor and analyze pertinent project information
to understand their progress in the context of the entire project. Users and
partners can utilize the open application programming interface (API) in
Rational ProjectConsole to write adapters to gather metrics and information
from other sources.
By making measurable project metrics and data available to all team
members, Rational ProjectConsole empowers development teams to make clear,
information-driven decisions to better manage their software projects and
build higher quality software faster.
"With more than 700 people in development teams in multiple locations
across Canada, precise and accurate communication of project status between
team members is essential for our success," said Rick Martelli, manager,
Integrated System Development Environment Programs, Lockheed Martin Canada.
"Rational ProjectConsole allows all team members to easily connect to a
project Web site that automatically compiles project data and metrics.
Rational ProjectConsole will help us more effectively plan, monitor and manage
projects and help ensure future software quality."
"At Pitney Bowes, we were looking for a user-friendly, automated system to
help us collect data about the cost, schedule and progress of our projects,"
said Kim Goclowski, senior software engineer, Pitney Bowes Inc., Global
Mailing Systems. "We feel that Rational ProjectConsole will enable us to
simplify access to project information and help us identify risks areas,
analyze trends and assess the quality of our projects."
Rational ProjectConsole provides templates and a template builder that
helps development teams quickly create their project Web site and begin
measuring progress. Rational ProjectConsole includes over 100 templates,
allowing users to customize their Web site and metrics display style to best
meet their teams' needs.
"Members of a software team should focus on building software, not filling
out time sheets and manual reports. Rational ProjectConsole liberates
development teams from such unproductive activities by automatically gathering
and communicating precise project status to all team members," said Eric
Schurr, senior vice president of marketing for Rational Software.

    Pricing and Availability
Rational ProjectConsole will be available within 30 days and will be
offered at no additional cost to all Rational Suite customers with an active
support contract.
