Rational ClearCase Provides Software Configuration Management Capabilities
From Small Workgroups to the Enterprise
LEXINGTON, Mass., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Rational Software (Nasdaq: RATL)
today announced Rational(R) ClearCase(R) v2002, which delivers broader
platform support and new capabilities to strengthen Rational's market-leading
Software Configuration Management (SCM) solution. Rational ClearCase provides
SCM capabilities to software development teams from small, co-located
workgroups to large distributed teams, including organizations that employ
mainframes to support their software development infrastructure.
Rational ClearCase v2002 was announced today in conjunction with Rational
Suite(R) v2002. Rational ClearCase is deeply integrated with all Rational
tools, and Rational(R) ClearCase(R) LT is included in every Rational Suite,
providing all Rational Suite customers an SCM solution and a seamless upgrade
path to full-function Rational ClearCase. Additional information on Rational
Suite v2002 is available at: http://www.rational.com/announcing2002.jsp.
As previously announced, IBM has selected Rational ClearCase LT to be
included with the IBM WebSphere Studio Application Developer, the only
software configuration management tool included as part of the product. This
provides IBM WebSphere Studio Application Developer customers with an
out-of-the-box SCM solution and enables them to seamlessly upgrade to
full-function Rational ClearCase. This press release is available at:

Rational has expanded the platform support for Rational ClearCase by
providing a new version that runs in IBM mainframe environments under the
Linux operating system on the IBM s/390 and IBM zSeries mainframe platforms.
This enables customers to take advantage of the economies of scale provided by
the IBM mainframe hardware platform.
Rational ClearCase on Linux for the mainframe also allows organizations to
share the artifacts they are managing on Windows or UNIX servers with users
managing artifacts on the mainframe. By using Linux for the mainframe,
customers can also benefit from centralized administration of Rational
ClearCase assets, which ensures data backup and restoration and the security
IBM mainframe environments offer.
"Rational ClearCase is a completely scalable solution that supports all
types and sizes of groups and development organizations," said Eric Schurr,
senior vice president of marketing for Rational Software. "The enhancements
we introduced today help free developers to focus on their projects by
providing access to Rational ClearCase directly from their chosen IDE and
enabling them to enjoy faster builds. This liberates the development team
from unproductive activities by offering consistent, reliable and secure
SCM -- from browser to mainframe -- and more effective component-based
development for the team."
In addition to Rational ClearCase's new support for mainframes, Rational
has also introduced enhancements to the Rational ClearCase Web browser
interface. These enhancements include workspace management, diff-and-merge
support and Unified Change Management (UCM) functionality, Rational's best
practices process for managing change from requirements to release. Together,
these capabilities provide remote users accessing Rational ClearCase through a
browser with more capabilities to help increase their productivity.
Rational ClearCase v2002 includes new support for workgroups with the
support of Windows Terminal Server and Windows XP. This offers Rational
ClearCase customers additional deployment options when implementing Rational
ClearCase. Rational ClearCase v2002 also includes enhancements in UCM
component-based development, providing an out-of-the-box best practices
process, even for complex projects and architectures.
This new release of Rational ClearCase also features a new integration
with the Sun Forte for C++ Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and
improved integrations with IBM WebSphere and Sybase PowerBuilder. For IBM
WebSphere, Rational ClearCase now includes a deployment wizard that automates
transfer of IBM WebSphere Studio and IBM VisualAge for Java artifacts to IBM
WebSphere servers, providing customers an efficient and reliable way to
transfer WebSphere development artifacts to test and production servers.
In addition, the Rational ClearCase deployment wizard automates archiving
of existing WebSphere server applications to Rational ClearCase, providing
customers a secure and reliable archive and restore facility for WebSphere
applications. Rational ClearCase v2002 also includes several additional
productivity-enhancing improvements, including new support for parallel builds
on Windows, a new platform independent Perl interface, as well as Rational
ClearCase Explorer enhancements.
