Record-Setting, Million Dollar Prize Slated for LPGA Event NOV. 15-18 at
Trump International
BOCA RATON, Fla., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Natalie Gulbis, fresh off a
victory over Bubba Watson, Greg Norman and Peter Jacobsen at Monday's ADT
Golf Skills Challenge, is set to return to South Florida next week to seek
another victory at the ADT Championship, Nov. 15-18 at the Trump
International Golf Club.
Gulbis, the only woman in the field, teamed with Hall of Fame
quarterback John Elway, to win the 16th annual ADT Skills Challenge Monday,
defeating the teams of Roger Clemens/Greg Norman, Bubba Watson/Dan Marino
and Peter Jacobsen/Jerry Rice. Her shots won three out of the event's eight
competitions early and Elway closed it out in the final skill by putting
his short-iron within 3 feet, 7 inches. The event was staged at The
Fairmont Turnberry Resort & Club in Aventura, Florida.
"The fact that Natalie is the first woman to win the ADT Skills
Challenge is evidence of the competitiveness and the caliber of our LPGA
players today," said Carolyn F. Bivens, Commissioner of the LPGA. "Natalie
was at the top of her game at the ADT Skills. I think she'll add a lot of
excitement to the field next week at the ADT Championship, especially with
all this momentum leading up to the tournament," added Bivens.
Gulbis' triumphs came on the greenside chip, which she holed out; the
"trouble shot," she hit to 4 feet, 8 inches; and the pitch over a hazard to
5 feet, 3 inches. In addition to the trophy, Gulbis and Elway split a
$310,000 first prize, a portion of which will be donated to charities.
"It was a great honor to be invited to play in this event with all of
these fabulous athletes," said Gulbis, who won her first LPGA Tour title
this year (Evian Masters) to help earn a berth in the 2007 ADT Championship
field. "To be the only girl, there was extra pressure and extra desire to
hold your own. Nobody wants to play poorly in these events."
Gulbis will be among the favorites in the grand finale of the LPGA
season that awards the winner a $1 million check, the largest first place
prize in women's sports. The event features the top 32 ranked LPGA players
and will be televised on the Golf Channel, Nov. 15-17 and the finals on
NBC, Nov. 18 from 3-6 p.m.
Also televised on NBC, the ADT Skills Challenge is among the longest
running events from golf's so-called "Challenge Season." It is etched on
the calendar as the only golf on network television (NBC) in late December,
when the sport is in its off season. All eight players will wear
microphones as part of an elaborate production that showcases great
shot-making and player personalities for the televised event scheduled to
air on Saturday and Sunday, December 29th and 30th.
Boca Raton-based ADT Security Services is the title sponsor of both ADT
Golf Skills Challenge and the ADT Championship, two of South Florida's most
prominent professional golf events.
