NEWTOWN, Pa., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- An international symposium entitled
"Non-Antibiotic Properties of Tetracyclines" will be held in Garden City, New
York on November 12-14. This meeting is being jointly sponsored by the Long
Island Jewish Medical Center of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine
("L.I.J.") and the National Institute of Dental Research under an educational
grant from CollaGenex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: CGPI). The symposium
will feature speakers from a number of diverse disciplines who will present
data on the application of the non-antibiotic properties of the tetracyclines
to the treatment of dental disorders, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, wound
healing and other medical conditions.
The symposium is being co-chaired by Robert A. Greenwald, M.D., Chief of
Rheumatology at L.I.J. and Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of
Medicine and Lorne M. Golub, D.M.D., Professor of Oral Biology at the State
University of New York at Stony Brook.
"This symposium will assemble the leading experts from around the world on
the medical and dental applications of the tetracycline family of molecules.
Special emphasis will be placed on the use of chemically modified, non-
antibiotic derivatives," said Dr. Greenwald.
"Thanks to the efforts of multiple research groups worldwide, the list of
medical applications for the tetracyclines continues to expand," said Dr.
Golub. "This symposium will feature speakers from ten countries and many
diverse disciplines. It will provide a rare opportunity for scientists linked
by a common interest in the unique properties of this fascinating class of
compounds to share their knowledge and ideas."
Participants at the meeting will include Dr. James O'Dell of the
University of Nebraska. At a recent meeting of the American College of
Rheumatology, Dr. O'Dell presented important clinical results which
demonstrated that minocycline, a tetracycline compound, may be an effective
treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.
"We are extremely happy to provide an educational grant to support this
symposium, which focuses on CollaGenex's core technology," said Brian M.
Gallagher, Ph.D., President and CEO of CollaGenex. "The results being
presented by a multitude of independent investigators help confirm the
widespread utility of these compounds."
