Raytheon Delivers Newest Patriot Missile Interceptor to U.S. Army

    TEWKSBURY, Mass., Nov. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/--
Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has completed its initial delivery of Patriot
Guidance Enhanced Missile Plus (GEM+) forebodies to the U.S. Army.
GEM+ is a significant upgrade over the existing Patriot Advanced
Capability-2 (PAC-2) missile and, when fielded in conjunction with the PAC-3
System, provides a robust capability against ballistic missiles, cruise
missiles, aircraft and remotely piloted vehicles.
These first forebodies, which were delivered two months early, are from
the initial lot of 148 that are currently under contract to the U.S. Army
Aviation and Missile Command in Huntsville, Ala. The Patriot GEM+ missiles are
part of an upgrade program to the Patriot system that includes the fielded
PAC-3 ground equipment upgrades and the new PAC-3 missile.
"This newest Patriot missile solidifies Raytheon's reputation as the
premier air defense company and a committed partner with the U.S. Army," said
Ed Franklin, president of Integrated Defense Systems.
GEM+ missiles are PAC-2 missiles that are refurbished and modernized at
Raytheon's Andover, Mass., manufacturing facility. Through the upgrade
process, older components are replaced, new technology inserted and
reliability increased. A modernized fuze is added that provides significant
performance improvements against tactical ballistic missile targets, and a new
low noise front end is inserted to increase the seeker's sensitivity and
improve acquisition and track performance against smaller radar cross section
targets. Work will be performed at Raytheon facilities in Andover and Bedford,
Mass.
Based in Tewksbury, Mass., Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems provides
integrated air and missile defense and naval and maritime warfighting systems,
including modeling and simulation capabilities for the U.S. Missile Defense
Agency, and strong global integrated capabilities for Army, Navy, Marine Corp,
and technology customers.
With headquarters in Lexington, Mass., Raytheon Company is a global leader
in defense, government and commercial electronics and business and special
mission aircraft.
