Scios Announces Four Abstracts Presented at American Heart Association's 75th Scientific Sessions

    SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Scios, Inc. (Nasdaq: SCIO) today announced that four abstracts related to
Natrecor(R) (nesiritide) will be presented at American Heart Association's
(AHA) Scientific Sessions 2002 conference in Chicago.
    "We are pleased to participate in the AHA Scientific Sessions meeting, one
of the premier cardiology conferences in the world, and look forward to
meeting with a wide variety of physicians to discuss the use of Natrecor to
treat patients suffering from acutely decompensated congestive heart failure,"
said Richard B. Brewer, president and chief executive of Scios.

    The four posters to be presented at AHA Scientific Sessions are:
    -- (Abstract #109353) Nesiritide (B-Type Natriuretic Peptide) Use in
       Patients with Renal Insufficiency and Acute Decompensated Heart
       Failure: Efficacy and Safety Results from the VMAC Trial, by Javed
       Butler, M.D. MPH, Cardiology Division Vanderbilt University Medical
       Center.  This poster presentation will take place on Tuesday, November
       19th from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm.
    -- (Abstract # 101803) The Effects of Nesiritide on Serum Levels of B-Type
       Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) in Patients admitted for Decompensated
       Congestive Heart Failure, by Alan S. Maisel M.D., of the San Diego VA
       Healthcare Center, San Diego.  This poster presentation will take place
       on Tuesday, November 19th from 4:00 - 6:00 pm.
    -- (Abstract #102399) Admission Endothelin-1 Levels in Patients with
       Decompensated Heart Failure Predict Short-Terms Survival After
       Discharge, by Doron Aronson, M.D., et al; Rambam Medical Center, Haifa,
       Israel.  This poster presentation will take place on Tuesday, November
       19th from 4:00 - 6:00 pm.
    -- (Abstract # 100856) Measures of Heart Rate Variability in Hospitalized
       Patients with Decompensated Heart Failure Predict Survival After
       Discharge, by Doron Aronson, M.D., et al; Rambam Medical Center, Haifa,
       Israel.  There will be an oral presentation of this poster from
       3:45 - 4:00 pm on Tuesday, November 19th.

    Scios also is supporting a dinner symposium during the meeting, entitled
"Spanning the Spectrum of Care in Acute Decompensated Heart Failure: The Role
of Natriuretic Peptides," that will take place on Monday, November 18, from
6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at The Field Museum.  Moderated by Marc A. Silver, M.D.,
Clinical Professor and Chairman, Department of Medicine, Director Heart
Failure Institute, Advocate Christ Hospital and Medical Center, Oak Lawn, IL,
the session will address the role of nesiritide to treat heart failure in a
variety of clinical settings.
