1927 'Surf City' Reference Found in Boardwalk Archives
SANTA CRUZ, Calif., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Santa Cruz Beach
Boardwalk, the oldest seaside amusement park on the West Coast, has discovered
new evidence supporting the city of Santa Cruz's claim to the title of
original "Surf City". The dispute about the title has been raging between the
California beach cities of Santa Cruz and Huntington Beach.
Researchers at the Beach Boardwalk recently discovered a 1927 newspaper
story from the San Jose Mercury Herald about a Pacific Coast Hoover convention
that references Santa Cruz as "Surf City".
The article entitled "Salesmen Praise Santa Cruz" includes a photograph of
the Hoover conventioneers captioned, "Managers of Pacific Coast Hoover company
who adjourned yesterday after a five-day convention at Surf City where they
came to attend school of instruction."
The article documents Santa Cruz's right to the title "Surf City"
thirty-six years prior to the release of the Jan and Dean hit song of the same
title. The family-owned Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is preparing materials for
a new book to be published in early 2007, to commemorate the 100th Anniversary
of the historic Beach Boardwalk seaside amusement park.
"It's settled," said Santa Cruz mayor Mike Rotkin. "We now have clear
evidence to support our claim to the title of Surf City."
"The company archivist is cataloging a large number of photographs,
newspaper clippings, and incredible artifacts from the Boardwalk's past," said
Marq Lipton, vice president of sales and marketing. "Most of these materials
have been filed, boxed, and forgotten for decades. It's exciting to discover
historical materials and images the public has never seen before."
The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is California's only seaside amusement park
offering both modern thrill rides and historic attractions. Located at 400
Beach Street in Santa Cruz, the park features rides, games, restaurants, and
free summer beach concerts. For more information visit http://www.beachboardwalk.com
