Raytheon, U.S. Navy Sign $107.1 Million Phalanx Overhaul Contract

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) is
being awarded a $107.1 million contract to overhaul 42 Phalanx Close-In Weapon
Systems for the United States Navy. The majority of the work is to be
performed at Raytheon Missile System's facility in Louisville, Ky., with
deliveries made through September 2006.
"This contract is a tremendous step forward by the U. S. Navy to enhance
the Phalanx systems currently in the fleet," said Dennis Carroll, Raytheon's
Phalanx systems director in Tucson, Ariz. "When the overhaul process is
complete, the Navy will essentially have 42 brand new Phalanx weapon systems."
    Phalanx is a rapid-fire, computer-controlled radar and 20-mm Gatling-gun
system that automatically acquires, tracks and destroys enemy threats that
have penetrated all other ship defense systems. More than 600 systems are
deployed in the navies of 21 nations. The latest upgrade to the Phalanx, the
Block 1B surface mode, provides both a radar and a thermal imager for
identification and rapid tactical actions in the cluttered near-shore,
littoral environments. This system protects ships and their crews against an
increased number of threats including standard and guided artillery;
helicopters; floating mines and a variety of shore-launched, anti-ship
missiles. It is especially effective against the swarming attacks of small,
fast gunboats.
"This new work will be in addition to manufacturing, overhaul and re-
manufacturing contracts already in place with the U. S. Navy and other
international customers," said Carroll. "Along with our work with the United
States Navy, Raytheon is currently producing Phalanx systems for six
international navies."
Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN), with 2002 sales of $16.8 billion, is an
industry leader in defense, government and commercial electronics, space,
information technology, technical services, and business and special mission
aircraft. With headquarters in Waltham, Mass., Raytheon employs more than
76,000 people worldwide.
