ATLANTA, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Respiratory Group of Mallinckrodt
Inc. (NYSE: MKG) is introducing the GoodKnight(TM) 418 home care system for
treating obstructive sleep apnea at the annual MedTrade Show here. The
GoodKnight 418 is a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) system used to
help apnea patients, whose breathing is interrupted during sleep. If left
untreated, this problem can eventually lead to high blood pressure, irregular
heart beats or even heart failure.
The GoodKnight 418 is quiet, compact and lightweight. It connects to a
mask that patients wear during sleep. Air pressure generated by the system
prevents air passages from being obstructed, which ensures that patient
breathing is uninterrupted during the night.
The machine allows patients to begin the sleep cycle with only slight air
pressure that increases as they move more deeply into sleep. This improves
comfort and increases the likelihood of patients continuing to use the system.
"This is an exciting addition to our product line," said John Hesemann,
president of Mallinckrodt's Respiratory Group. "We believe our system offers
more positive features in its price range than anything currently on the
market."
The total market for CPAP systems approaches $160 million a year.
Mallinckrodt believes the GoodKnight 418 will help increase its share of this
growing market, Hesemann said.
Based in St. Louis, Mo., Mallinckrodt Inc. has three healthcare product
groups -- Imaging, Pharmaceuticals and Respiratory. The company operates in
more than 100 countries and had fiscal 1998 net sales of $2.37 billion. The
