The company today launches the Gateway(R) 860 NAS (network-attached
storage) appliance, a pre-configured rackmount device intended to run on
Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 that simply plugs into any Ethernet-
based network and can hold up to 1TB(1) of data. Based on serial ATA
technology -- which is 30 to 50 percent less expensive than SCSI drives, yet
provides similar capacity -- the Gateway 860 is a no-brainer for IT managers
wanting next-generation technology at a reasonable price.
Customers can now officially begin ordering the Gateway 860 NAS, which
marks Gateway's first entrant in more than two years into the estimated
$4 billion NAS market. Gateway today also launches the Gateway 840 SATA JBOD,
a SAN alliance with Hitachi and new Gateway systems management software -- all
part of a major new push by the company into the rapidly growing storage
market. (Please see separate press releases for more information.)
"With the launch of the Gateway 860 NAS, Gateway is truly changing from a
server vendor into a provider of end-to-end systems for business customers,"
said Scott Weinbrandt, senior vice president and general manager of Gateway's
Enterprise Systems Division. "Featuring less expensive SATA drives, Ethernet
connectivity and a slim, 1U form factor, the 860 helps time- and resource-
strapped organizations truly achieve plug-and-play storage. It's clear that
with this product we're making it a priority at Gateway to make storage easy
to use and maintain."
Built to fit into any rack-optimized server environment or work as a
standalone device, the Gateway 860 NAS serves as a virtual "shared drive" for
all network users, whether clients or servers. Small- and medium-sized
businesses, government agencies and educational institutions will find the 860
to be a self-managing storage solution ideal for basic database, email or
file-sharing applications. In addition, the 860 offers a host of redundancy
features that provides added protection for critical data, including a built-
in RAID controller and redundant fans.
The Gateway 860(R) NAS supports up to four, hot-swappable 80(1), 160(1)
or 250GB(1) SATA drives, and can scale up to 1TB of data (4 x 250GB). Powered
by an Intel Celeron or Pentium 4 processor (up to 3.06 GHz), the Gateway 860
features 512MB of error-correcting memory and a built-in hardware RAID
controller. The NAS also offers two 64-bit, 33 Mhz PCI slots, one mini-PCI,
dual GB Ethernet slots and two USB 2.0 connectors -- giving customers maximum
connectivity options. As an added bonus, the appliance features a unique, LCD
front panel and front-loading CD-ROM drive.
Offered at a base price of approximately $3,199(2) for the 320GB model,
the Gateway 860 comes with four 80GB(1) serial ATA drives, a RAID controller
(0, 1 and 5 options) and built-in standard rack rails at no additional charge.
The Gateway 860 will ship in mid-December and is expected to operate on
Windows Storage Server 2003.
