Raytheon Awarded Contract Valued in Excess of $48 Million For Mine Hunting System

    PORTSMOUTH, R.I., Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company
(NYSE: RTNA, RTNB) has been awarded an $11.7 million U.S. Navy contract for
two AN/SQS-20 high-speed acoustic mine hunting systems. The potential value of
the contract, when all options are exercised, is $48.2 million.
The AN/AQS-20 is an advanced helicopter and surface towed mine hunting
sonar system that incorporates five separate sonars in a compact, lightweight
and hydrodynamically stable towed body. The system uses state-of-the-art-
imaging sonars, signal processing and computer algorithms to provide real-time

threat mines.
The AN/AQS-20 localizes threat mines and provides the operator with a
visual image and contact data list. The two systems under contract will be
towed from the Lockheed Martin Remote Minehunting System; the optional systems
will be towed from the MH-53 helicopter.
"Using state-of-the-art imaging sonars, the AN/SQS-20 will allow the U.S.
Navy safe passage through mined waters," said Dan Smith, Raytheon's Naval and
Maritime Integrated Systems (N&MIS) vice president and general manager.
Under this contract, which was awarded by the Naval Surface Warfare Center-
Coastal Systems Stations, Dahlgren Division, Panama City, Fla., work will be
performed at the N&MIS facility in Portsmouth, R.I and is expected to be
complete by February 2003.
N&MIS has operations in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, California and
Washington State in the U.S., as well as in Australia. It is a premier
