have family and friends to your home for a traditional holiday feast and not
have to spend all day in the kitchen. The secret: heat-and-serve holiday
dinners to go.
"All kinds of people are ordering heat-and-serve holiday dinners to go,"
Pam Matthews, vice president of service delis for Fred Meyer, said. "We see
families where both spouses work and families with single-parents. All are
strapped for time and looking for help. We see young adults hosting their
first holiday meals. We see people going to other people's homes who want to
contribute to those meals. We see people who don't have the kitchens,
expertise, or inclinations to cook large meals but still want to celebrate
with friends and family over a meal at home. All these people and more are
turning to their supermarkets for holiday dinners to go."
Matthews said she sees a growing appreciation of supermarkets as sources
of high-quality meals for home. Fred Meyer has responded with an increasing
variety of service deli food year-around. And for the year-end holidays, the
service deli has increased it selection from two holiday dinners two years ago
to a total of five different meals to go today. From two sizes of traditional
turkey dinners in 2001, Fred Meyer added a prime rib dinner in 2002, and in
2003 added a spiral ham dinner and a low-carb turkey dinner. These heat-and-
serve meals include:
-- Traditional Holiday Dinner serves 6-8 people and includes a Foster
Farms turkey, old fashioned mashed potatoes, stuffing, and gravy.
-- Premium Holiday Dinner serves 8-10 people and includes a Foster Farms
turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, green bean/mushroom
casserole, cranberry/pineapple chutney, dinner rolls, and an apple or
pumpkin pie.
-- Prime Rib Dinner serves 4-6 people and includes prime rib roast and au
jus, garlic mashed potatoes, corn, dinner rolls, and an apple or
pumpkin pie.
-- Spiral Ham Dinner serves 6-8 people and includes spiral ham, scalloped
potatoes, corn, cranberry/pineapple chutney, dinner rolls, and an apple
or pumpkin pie.
-- Low-Carb Dinner serves 6-8 and includes a Foster Farms turkey, mashed
cauliflower, broccoli cheese au gratin, turkey gravy, and mushroom &
sausage stuffing.
Matthews said customers should order in advance using simple forms
available at the service delis. The delis need enough time to have everything
ready so the customers can easily heat and serve the dinner when they get
home.
For vegetarians, the Fred Meyer Nutrition Center offers a bird-free
Tofurky Feast that serves four people. Made by Turtle Island Foods of Hood
River, Oregon, it includes a tofurky roast made from organic soybeans with a
wild rice stuffing, plus cranberry apple potato dumplings, tofurky giblet
gravy, extra wild rice stuffing, and tofurky jurky wishstix.
