VERNON HILLS, Ill., Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Freestyle aerialist, Eric
Bergoust, three time World Champion and Olympic Gold Medallist, is preparing
for his 2006 Olympic Aerial Skiing qualification by focusing not only on his
routine training regimen stressing physical strength, agility, flexibility and
coordination-but also on his visual performance-in order to get ready.
"When you attempt 'quads' (four flips with three twists) there is precious
little room for error," said Air Bergy, as he is known. "Depending on the
weather and sunlight, shadows and poor contrast on the snow can really have an
effect on the timing of my moves-I need precision in the quality of my vision
to hit the mark," said Eric.
Air Bergy sought a vision performance consultation with Barry L. Seiller,
M.D., Director and Founder of The Visual Fitness Institute at The Eye Care
Center in Vernon Hills, Illinois. "In looking at Eric's situation we assessed
his vision using a new clinical tool, called a LADARWave(TM) Aberrometer in
order to determine whether he had aberrations that could effect his contrast
and vision performance under different lighting conditions."
"By using this advanced technology to measure both lower and higher order
aberrations, and then treating Eric's unique pattern of errors with Laser
Vision Correction, I aimed to improve both his visual acuity, which is
measured against standard numerical outcomes like 20/20, as well as his
overall quality of vision, such as increased crispness and clarity under
varying light conditions," said Dr. Seiller.
In fact, using the LADARWave(TM) wavefront analysis system, Dr. Seiller
found Eric's prescription was made up of both lower order aberrations causing
his nearsightedness and astigmatism as well as higher order aberrations such
as spherical aberration. "With the wavefront analysis system I was able to
examine Eric and then perform LASIK using customizable software to treat the
total aberrations found, rather than just his nearsightedness and
astigmatism," said Dr. Seiller.
Looking to his future hopes in the 2006 Olympic Aerial Freestyle
competition, Eric reported," I feel really great physically. I am totally
impressed with my vision-I can see details regardless of time of day or
effects of shadows ... it's going to be a great season."
