Raytheon Systems Limited Wins Pounds 3.8m Semiconductor Contract With VTI Hamlin

GLENROTHES, Scotland, Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Systems Limited
(RSL) has won its largest contract ever for its semiconductor business. VTI
Hamlin of Finland, one of Raytheon's key customers, has awarded the company a
contract valued at pounds 3.8m for Application Specific Integrated Circuits
(ASICs).
RSL in Glenrothes, Scotland, has worked closely with VTI on the
development of ASICs, mainly for use in generic sensor products for the
automotive industry, since 1995. Low volume production began in 1997 and has
increased rapidly since, with several million ASICs due to be produced this
year. Raytheon's willingness to work with VTI on continual improvement of the
design was a key factor in the award of the latest contract.
VTI's sensors are used to measure acceleration, shock, inclination and
pressure and are supplied to a number of industries. Applications in the
automobile industry include electronically controlled suspension systems,
anti-skid braking systems, traction control systems and engine management
units. VTI's acceleration and pressure sensors consist of high performance
silicon capacitive sensing elements and interface electronics -- including
Raytheon's ASICs -- built into application specific packages.
Hannu Manninen, VTI's Development Manager, said, "Raytheon's commitment to
quality and continuous improvement through their Six Sigma programme is very
important to us and something that we require from our strategic suppliers.
This strategy will support them in focusing on the key quality issues that are
vital factors for both our customers and ourselves in the competitive
automotive business.
Neil McGovern, Semiconductor Business Unit Manager at RSL Glenrothes,
said: "This is a major success for our business and the contract ensures a
significant proportion of next year's production. It has come as a result of
our development and support of VTI as a valued key customer. We are
constantly working with them on new products and devices to help VTI continue
their rapid growth. Through Raytheon's Six Sigma programme we continue to
increase our efforts to meet the high expectations of the automotive
industry."
