Applied Imaging Elects G. Kirk Raab as Chairman

    SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Applied Imaging Corp. (Nasdaq: AICX) today announced that G. Kirk Raab was
elected Chairman of the Board of Directors, succeeding Jack Goldstein, Ph.D.
who will continue as a director. Dr. Goldstein plans to devote himself
full-time to his new responsibilities as President of Chiron Corporation's
Blood Testing division.
    Mr. Raab, a director of the Company since 1996, brings over 40 years of
experience as a senior executive in health industries to his role as Chairman.
He was President and Chief Executive Officer of Genentech Inc. from February
1990 to July 1995. Prior to joining Genentech, Mr. Raab served in a number of
executive managerial positions at Abbott Laboratories Inc., latterly as
President, Chief Operating Officer and a director. He is currently Chairman of
the Boards of Connetics, Inc. and Oxford GlycoSciences (UK) Ltd., and is a
member of the Boards of Directors of a number of private companies. He is also
a director of The National Foundation for Science and Technology Medals.
Mr. Raab received his B.A. from Colgate University where he is a Trustee
Emeritus. He is a member of Exeter College and was elected to the Chancellor's
Court of Benefactors of Oxford University in September 2002.
    Dr. Goldstein was recently appointed president of Chiron Corporation's
Blood Testing division. He also serves as a member of Chiron's executive
committee. Since 2000, he has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of
Applied Imaging Corp. From 1997 to 2000, he served as president and chief
executive officer of the Company. Dr. Goldstein will continue to serve as a
member of the Board of Directors of the Company.
