9/11 Families Name Candidates for Independent Commission

    WASHINGTON, Nov. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- A coalition of 9/11 families today
named five people they want President Bush and congressional leaders to
appoint to the 10-member independent commission scheduled to become law this
morning when the President signs the Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal
Year 2003.
The Campaign for a 9/11 Independent Commission wants the President to
appoint former Senator Warren Rudman to the position of chairman of the
commission and wants Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle and House Democratic
Leader Nancy Pelosi to appoint Representative Tim Roemer (D- Ind.) to the
position of vice chairman. Roemer is serving his last term in Congress this
year.
Other individuals that the coalition wants as commissioners are former
Senator Gary Hart, former Representative Lee Hamilton, and Eleanor Hill, staff
director of the Joint 9/11 Inquiry conducted by the House and Senate
Intelligence Committees.

The coalition set forth the following parameters for the selection of all
10 commissioners:

     1. The commissioners should represent a diversity of backgrounds and
interests in order to ensure that different perspectives are brought
        to bear.

     2. There should be a mix of academics, practitioners, those with a
background in law, and people who have served in the government in one
        capacity or another.

     3. The 10 commissioners must, together, be able to bring expertise in
the fields of intelligence, foreign policy, terrorist financing,
aviation security, law enforcement, and immigration policy and border
        security.

     4. The commissioners must not have financial ties to any stakeholders in
the intelligence, defense, aviation, security, or energy fields.

     5. Those selected must be able to make the work of the commission
their highest priority, devoting as much time as necessary to the
        commission's deliberations.

     6. The number of commissioners who have served in the federal government
over the last four years should be limited to avoid conflicts.

     7. Most importantly, commissioners must be of the highest integrity, must
be willing to act independently and aggressively, and must possess a
determination to work as a team with the other commissioners in a
        nonpartisan manner.

The members of the Campaign for a 9/11 Independent Commission are Families
of September 11, September 11th Advocates, the Skyscraper Safety Campaign, and
Voices of September 11th.
