R2 Technology Introduces ImageChecker(R) DMax: High Volume, High Performance Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) System

R2 Technology and Array Corporation USA Announce Exclusive Agreement
for Newly Designed Laser Film Scanner

CHICAGO, Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- R2 Technology, Inc., the recognized
leader in computer-aided detection (CAD) technology for medical imaging, today
announced the introduction of the ImageChecker(R) DMax CAD system, here at the
90th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of
North America (RSNA), November 28-December 2. Engineered to enhance workflow,
the ImageChecker DMax system is powered by a new high volume, high performance
laser scanner, developed collaboratively by R2 and Array Corporation USA, and
offers twice the case throughput of other CAD systems while delivering
superior image quality.
R2 also announces an exclusive agreement with Array Corporation USA for
this new laser film scanner, engineered specifically for the ImageChecker DMax
system. Array was selected for this initiative "because of its long history
and reputation for providing exceptional image quality and performance, and
its ability to bring ImageChecker to the highest end of the technical
spectrum, for customers demanding the most superior image quality possible,"
stated William J. Mercer, president and CEO of R2 Technology. "The Array laser
scanner provides the best penetration of high density film available,
resulting in better images for CAD processing and review."
Able to scan a mammography film every 30 seconds, the unique, ergonomic
design of this mammography CAD processing system provides maximum efficiency
and ease of use. The ImageChecker DMax system has the smallest footprint R2
has ever offered, providing high-density, high performance CAD.
The ImageChecker DMax is built around Array's latest laser film digitizer,
a 50-micron resolution, noise-reducing system capable of penetrating films up
to density OD4.3. The superb performance of the film scanner is directly
responsible for the superior quality of images archived by ImageChecker DMax's
DigitalNow feature, which allows clinics to archive the digitized film images
to PACS. Image quality is particularly important when the archived images are
to be used later for comparison purposes on softcopy review workstations.
"The ImageChecker DMax is named after the blackest part of a mammography
film, that of the highest optical density, often referred to as Dmax," said
Julian Marshall, principal engineer for R2 Technology. "Combined with the
Array technology's superior penetration of high density film, the new high
performance DMax system provides the best possible CAD images and is ideal for
use by high volume mammography clinics that demand proven clinical value and
maximum productivity."
Computer-aided detection is used by increasing numbers of radiologists as
"a second pair of eyes" when reading a mammogram. Clinical trials demonstrated
that use of the ImageChecker system could result in earlier detection of up to
23.4 percent of the cancers currently detected with screening mammography.
The ImageChecker system from R2 Technology was the first CAD system
approved by the FDA for use with mammography. Since 1998, R2 Technology has
received 17 supplemental approvals for technological and clinical advances.
To date, more than 1,500 ImageChecker CAD systems have been shipped worldwide
and some eight million women have their mammograms interpreted annually with
the aid of this leading CAD technology for the early detection of breast
cancer.
"We are pleased to partner with R2 Technology, each of us representing the
high end of our core disciplines, to create the highest performing CAD system
on the market," said Thomas J. Nardozzi, president of Array Corporation USA.
"Powered by the new Array laser film scanner, the DMax produces superior
quality images at twice the speed of other CAD systems. High quality scanners
like Array's are critical for analog sites as well as centers that are
transitioning to digital and need the ability to compare digitized priors side
by side in a digital format."

    About Array Corporation USA
Array Corporation USA provides technically superior solutions for
capturing and communicating image data, and helps increases clinical
productivity with digital scanning speed, performance and reliability. Using
precise optics and a helium neon laser, Array scanning technology scans 14x17
film at 2K resolution in seven seconds, almost four times faster than its
nearest competitor. It provides a true optical density of up to 4.3 with an
accuracy of .002, while the nearest digitizer can achieve only about 3.7 OD.
With a variable sampling pitch that changes spot size from 50 microns to 500
microns in one micron steps, the 2905 easily covers all possible uses for film
digitization. Since its establishment in the U.S. in 1998, Array Corporation
USA has cultivated a broad, nationwide network of validated vendors,
authorized sales and service distributorships and direct end user clients. For
