ST. LOUIS, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Mallinckrodt Inc. (NYSE: MKG) has sold
its Medical Gas Distribution Systems (MGDS) facility in Lenexa, Kan., to
Beacon Medical Products. Based in Charlotte, N.C., Beacon Medical Products is
a former manufacturer's representative for MGDS and a leading manufacturer of
medical air and vacuum systems.
Medical Gas Distribution Systems produces the medical gas outlets, alarms
and accessories used in hospitals to move medical gases from the source to
medical gas outlets in the operating room, intensive care unit, or patient's
bedside. The business was part of the former Nellcor Puritan Bennett, the
respiratory products firm Mallinckrodt acquired in August 1997.
"This sale is another step toward making Mallinckrodt a more efficient
healthcare business," said John Q. Hessman, president of Mallinckrodt's
Respiratory Group. "The good news for Medical Gas Distribution Systems
employees is that the operation will remain in Lenexa. Beacon Medical has
indicated that virtually all 35 employees will retain their jobs."
Hessmann added that the facility will move from its current location at
10800 Pflumm to another site in the immediate Lenexa area after April 30 of
next year. In the meantime, Mallinckrodt will support transition of the
operations to Beacon by providing information systems and human resources
services through Dec. 31, 1998.
The sale of Mallinckrodt's Medical Gas Distribution Systems follows the
announced relocation of a Lenexa research and development facility to other
Mallinckrodt Respiratory Group sites in Pleasanton, Calif.; Carlsbad, Calif.;
and St. Charles, Mo. About 100 employees are affected by those moves.
Since the acquisition of Nellcor Puritan Bennett, Mallinckrodt also has
been moving support functions in areas such as finance, accounting, and
information systems from Lenexa to Chesterfield, Mo.
Mallinckrodt's separate medical gas business, which supports a system of
32 gas branches and four nitrous oxide manufacturing facilities across the
country, remains in Overland Park, Kan., and is unaffected by this transition.

groups -- Imaging, Pharmaceuticals and Respiratory. The company operates in
