SAN DIEGO, Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Trega Biosciences, Inc. (Nasdaq: TRGA)
today announced the appointment of Alan L. Hillyard, Ph.D. to the position of
Vice President of Informatics and Chief Information Officer. Dr Hillyard will
be responsible for the integration of Trega's information technologies and
systems.
Prior to joining Trega, Dr. Hillyard was the Vice President of Information
Systems at Axys Pharmaceuticals where he was responsible for integration of
bioinformatics, cheminformatics, structural biology, pharmacology and clinical
development. Previously, Dr. Hillyard was Vice President, Chief Technical
Officer of Base4 Bioinformatics, a firm focused on the application of
information technologies to the acceleration of drug discovery. Dr. Hillyard
has also held positions as Manager of Research Computing at The Jackson
Laboratory where, among other accomplishments, he established a Research
Computing Department and created the first genomic database of the mouse
(GBASE). GBASE has been used by more than 200 organizations in over 30
countries. In addition, Dr. Hillyard served as a consultant to the USDA's
Animal Genome Program (1993-1997), where he directed database development
projects for a number of important livestock species.
"We are aggressively building information and knowledge-based discovery
technologies and are pleased to have Alan join this effort," said Michael G.
Grey, president and chief executive officer. "Information and the use of
information through predictive models is rapidly becoming a critical element
in drug discovery. The experience that Alan possesses, along with his
scientific background and extensive knowledge of information technology and
management, make him an ideal candidate to drive our information and
knowledge-based technologies to commercialization."
"I am impressed with Trega's progress thus far in the area of discovery
technologies," said Dr. Hillyard. "Trega's rapid progress in the development
of predictive modeling is addressing a major hurdle preventing timely
decisions in the drug discovery process. I am excited to be a part of the
team developing this important technology."
Trega Biosciences is an information-driven company focused on accelerating
the process of drug discovery from disease targets to clinical candidates by
using small molecule combinatorial chemistry, high throughput screening and
predictive bioinformatics to rapidly create novel drug candidates having
greater chances of clinical success. In combination with its wholly owned
subsidiary, NaviCyte, Trega offers integrated products and services spanning
the drug discovery process -- beginning with synthesizing novel compounds to
providing uniquely qualified drug leads -- to the pharmaceutical and
biopharmaceutical industries. Trega also uses its drug discovery technologies
in its internal development programs, which are focused on discovering small
molecules acting on melanocortin receptors, which may be important in the
treatment of inflammatory and metabolic diseases.
