Patent Issued to Silverfish: Sunglass Manufacturer is Granted Patent on Sunglasses For Surfing

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Silverfish, LLC, the leading
supplier of surf sunglasses, today announced it has been awarded U.S. Patent
No. 6,629,760 on its Interference Fit(TM) technology. Silverfish has also
been granted foreign counterpart patents in Australia and South Africa and has
patents pending in Europe.
By concentrating on the structure of the human skull and eliminating
elasticity, the company's Interference Fit(TM) allows eyewear to be worn
securely, comfortably and with maximum ventilation in the most extreme of
sports and conditions. The new technology locks the extremely durable,
injection-molded Grilamid(R) nylon frame onto the wearer for worry free
surfing. The unprecedented level of eyewear retention is necessary in
activities ranging from surfing and kayaking to skydiving and motorcycling.
The expense of losing or destroying contact lenses and glasses in the
ocean and the harmful effects of the sun on the eyes motivated Mark Razin,
Silverfish's President and an avid surfer, to create Whistler(TM), the model
utilizing the new technology. Razin, who has worn prescription glasses and
contact lenses since he was 16, commented "We wanted to allow people who
require vision correction to be on a level playing field with those who have
20/20 vision, and all wearers to have the advantage of UV protection, glare
reduction and relief from water spray."
Razin went on to note that most water sports enthusiasts don't protect
their eyes from the sun when they need to most, in the reflecting water.
Prolonged sun exposure has been linked to pterygiums and cataracts, both eye
maladies that may require surgery.
Whistler's lenses have a four-layer protection scheme that includes
polarized, distortion-free, 100% UV coated, polycarbonate lenses that are
specially imported from Japan. The polarization reduces surface glare which
is at its highest levels on wet surfaces while the distortion-free attributes
eliminate headaches, common in lower end polarized eyewear. The UV coating
protects against harmful sun rays. The nearly unbreakable polycarbonate lens
material eliminates shattering, which is possible with other lens materials.
Additional innovations such as Capsule Vents(TM) and Wave Channels(TM)
were incorporated to combat fogging. A leash system was developed as a
secondary line of defense in the eyewear retention system. Conscious of
consumers' high costs of eyewear, a removable quick-release strap was
developed to create a dual use product, allowing the eyewear to double as a
pair of sunglasses.
"We were pleasantly surprised in the interest expressed from those outside
of surfing, including snow boarders, mountain bikers, and even casual
wearers." Razin attributed the enthusiasm in casual use to Whistler's sleek
design and the fact that it resembles sunglasses more than goggles. "When
people are finished playing, they simply remove the quick-release strap and
have a pair of stylish sunglasses."
Whistler is available in black or silver frames and includes a removable
quick-release strap, leash, Snapper(TM) nose piece and micro fiber pouch.
Product shots of Whistler are available online at http://www.silverfish.com.
Whistler is available for purchase at surf, sport and optical retail outlets
or via the internet at Silverfish.com. The eyewear retails at a suggested
price of US$99.
