Before withdrawing from international markets in 2001 to focus on its core
U.S. business, the Gateway brand was a great success in Japan, selling more
than 1.5 million PCs from 1994 to 2001. Leveraging the distribution channels
of its eMachines brand, the company now offers its new line of Gateway PCs
through leading Japanese retailers including Ishimaru Denki Co. Ltd., Joshin
Denki Co. Ltd., Nojima Corp. and Tsukumo Co. Ltd. The fastest growing retail
PC company in the United States (1), Gateway is well positioned for retail
success in Japan.
"Customers in Japan expect top quality and service when purchasing a PC,
but they pay a premium for national brands," said Wayne Inouye, Gateway's
president and CEO. "We've built our business model on delivering maximum
value for PCs that lead the industry in quality, performance and customer
support. We're pleased to bring Gateway PCs back to Japan and we're confident
that customers will recognize the brand's superior value."
The Gateway notebook line includes two thin and light models -- the
high-performance Gateway(R) 4000JP series and the Gateway(R) 3538JP notebook,
which offers true mobility without compromise. The Gateway 3538JP is just
1.2-inches thin and weighs just 5.27 pounds (2), but comes with a 14.1-inch
widescreen and full-size keyboard, typically found only in larger notebooks.
For customers needing more performance and a bigger display, Gateway 4000JP
series is just 1-inch thin and weighs 5.5 pounds (2) with a brilliant 15-inch
screen. Both platforms offer Intel processors, optional 802.11g wireless,
long battery life and features for enjoying digital media.
Gateway also unveiled a new high-performance desktop PC and provided a
sneak preview of its upcoming small form-factor desktop. The Gateway(R) 705JP
is the first retail PC in Japan to be based on the new "BTX" design, which
Gateway optimized to deliver significant enhancements in cooling, noise
reduction and overall reliability. The Gateway 600 series provides top
performance computing in a small, slim 10-liter tower and will be available
for sale in Japan in early 2005.
(See related product announcements issued today for more details about the
Gateway 4000JP series, Gateway 3538JP and Gateway 705JP.)
In November, Gateway set the stage for its return to Japan by announcing
enhancements to its customer support for both current and future customers.
The company built on its existing service infrastructure, setting higher
standards to improve overall customer satisfaction. This included faster
response times, better availability of replacement parts and improved repair
service.
"Gateway has a strong legacy of outstanding customer support in Japan,"
said Mike Zimmerman, Gateway's senior vice president of customer care services
and quality assurance. "The company won awards from Nikkei Personal Computing
for its service excellence for three years running from 1999 to 2001, and
we've remained committed to our customers since that time. Our goal in
Gateway's return to Japan is to become the leader in overall customer
satisfaction."
Today, Gateway customer service representatives in Japan are available
toll-free 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so customers can rely on getting
the support they need, when they need it. Supplementing its telephone
support, Gateway offers live online chat and email-based customer service.
Gateway also offers flexible repair options with in-store service, depot
repair and self-service (3).
