Rational Unified Process Now Supports Easy Customization with Broad Selection
of Plug-Ins for Development Projects
LEXINGTON, Mass., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Rational Software (Nasdaq: RATL)
today announced that the company has collaborated with a broad range of key
industry leaders, including IBM, Microsoft Corp. and Sun Microsystems, to
expand the Rational Unified Process(R) into an industry-wide process platform.
The Rational Unified Process is a comprehensive, Web-enabled set of
software engineering best practices that provide customers with guidance for
streamlining their teams' development activities.
Rational has developed a new component-based architecture to serve as the
underlying framework for the Rational Unified Process, augmenting it with a
new Plug-In capability that facilitates customization by Rational, by Rational
partners, and by customers themselves. Rational has also established the
RUP(R) Exchange, an online community and distribution channel that enables
customers to upload and download process Plug-Ins. Nine Plug-Ins from Rational
and its partners, including Hewlett Packard, are immediately available via the
RUP Exchange. Additional Plug-Ins developed by Kabira Technologies and CAST
will also be offered. Rational partners are utilizing the RUP Exchange to
distribute their extensive knowledge of technology, tools, and process to
software practitioners worldwide.
Using the Rational Unified Process augmented by Plug-Ins, software
practitioners gain access to detailed guidelines for developing software
targeted to IBM WebSphere, Microsoft .NET, Sun ONE, BEA WebLogic, and other
leading platforms. Guidelines for specific tools, technologies and domains are
also provided, enabling project teams to execute more predictably and
effectively. The new RUP(R) Builder tool makes it easy to configure the
Rational Unified Process by choosing from among available Plug-Ins.
"The Rational Unified Process Plug-In for the IBM WebSphere Application
Server will offer significant benefits to IBM WebSphere customers who are
attempting to accelerate the productivity of J2EE developers," said Derek
Bildfell, Program Director -- WebSphere Market Development Strategy for IBM.
"This Plug-In captures the knowledge base of both IBM's and Rational's joint
experiences building IBM WebSphere applications in large enterprise IT
organizations. This solution can be tailored to any size WebSphere
application and the documented process is automated by our integrated product
offerings -- thus speeding the development and deployment of business critical
e-business applications."
"Microsoft is pleased to be working with Rational Software on the Rational
Unified Process Plug-In for the Microsoft .NET platform," said Robert Green,
lead product manager for Visual Studio .NET at Microsoft Corp. "The Rational
Unified Process Plug-In for Microsoft .NET will help jump-start development
teams so they can build better designed and more robust applications using
Visual Studio .NET. We believe that Rational's new RUP Builder is a huge step
forward in making the Rational Unified Process an easy to use development
process for our customers."
"Building solutions based on open standards is the vision of Java
Technology and the Sun ONE platform," said Shahram Moradpour, Senior Director,
Market Development, Sun Microsystems. "By basing their workbench on open
standards and encouraging the development of Plug-Ins, Rational has created an
excellent tool for the Java developer community. Combined with the benefits of
the Sun ONE integratable platform and Java technology, the Rational Unified
Process will enable developers to quickly scale their capabilities to develop
and deploy high-quality Java based solutions."
Plug-Ins are developed with the Rational Process Workbench(R), a
process-authoring tool based on the Object Management Group's (OMG) Software
Process Engineering Meta Model (SPEM). SPEM is an open and extensible
standard that employs the Unified Modeling Language (UML) to model software
development processes. From a UML description, the Rational Process Workbench
can automatically generate a Plug-In that is ready for use. The RUP Exchange
offers training materials and tutorials on how to build Plug-Ins, and is
available on the Rational Developer Network(SM) (http://www.rational.net).
Rational partners, including Ensemble Systems, Applied Information
Sciences, and Software Productivity Center Inc., have formed consulting teams
within their organizations to assist customers and other Rational partners in
building Rational Unified Process Plug-Ins with domain or platform-specific
content for their project's needs. Rational will continue to strengthen the
Rational Unified Process' position as an industry-wide process platform by
enabling customers to use the Rational Unified Process with an even greater
variety of platforms, domains, and tools.
"With this support from industry leaders, the Rational Unified Process has
become an industry-wide process platform," said Eric Schurr, senior vice
president of marketing for Rational Software. "The new Rational Unified
Process is a more configurable process platform that can be more easily
customized to fit our customers' needs. The broad support from industry
leaders, combined with the openness of the enhanced Rational Unified Process,
provides software teams with unprecedented levels of both flexibility and tool
and technology-specific guidance, helping to bring higher quality software
development projects to market faster."
