SOUTHFIELD, MI USA
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Automotive suppliers,
Federal-Mogul (OTC Bulletin Board: FDMLQ) and Siemens VDO, announced today
that they will jointly develop a combustion sensor that is integrated into the
glow plug in diesel engine applications. This innovative sensor will, for the
first time, enable the combustion to be monitored directly in the cylinder.
Volume production is scheduled to start in 2006. This agreement covers both
manufacturing and marketing of the new technology.

The injection system and the engine management play a vital role in
reducing vibrations, noise, emission of pollutants and fuel consumption in
modern diesel engines. Piezo Common Rail injection, brought on the market for
the first time by Siemens VDO, support these targets by providing the option
of multiple injection. In order to precisely control the combustion process
in diesel engines with multiple injections, Federal-Mogul and Siemens VDO will
use a sensor that monitors the pressure curve directly in the cylinder through
a sensor located in the glow plug, which facilitates the cold start of diesel
engines.
"This is an exciting opportunity for Federal-Mogul to showcase our
expertise and innovative technology while working with Siemens VDO, a partner
with proven competence in the field of powertrain electronics and sensors,"
said Mark Sullivan, vice president global ignition at Federal-Mogul.
"Federal-Mogul is a leading supplier of engine components. Our
specializations complement one another outstandingly," said Dr. Klaus Egger,
board member at Siemens VDO Automotive AG responsible for the powertrain
business unit.
