Raytheon Delivers 2000th Anti-Jam Antenna System

HARLOW, Dec. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Systems Limited (RSL) has just
delivered the 2000th GAS-1 unit, the company's highly successful GPS Anti-Jam
Antenna system, which is now in operation with the armed forces of the United
States, the UK, and eleven other nations.
This major milestone event was recognised with a presentation ceremony at
the company's Harlow, Essex, facility, on the 20th November. Those present
included Captain Robert Lopez of the US Navy's Space and Naval Warfare Systems
Command (SPAWAR), who accepted the 2000th unit on behalf of the United States
Government.
Richard Daniel, Director of the Airborne and Naval Systems business group,
at RSL presented the unit and said: "GPS Anti-jam navigation solutions, in
particular the GAS-1 system, have been an important success story for our
Harlow facility and it is a technology in which we have developed considerable
expertise. It is fitting that the 2000th unit should be going to our largest
customer for the GAS-1 system , the US Government, and I was proud to have
been at the handover ceremony." He continued, "RSL takes its commitments to
deliver high quality products on time very seriously, and through achieving
this with the GAS-1 product we aim to give our customers the support and
equipment they need to achieve success."
In reply Captain Lopez, using an example from the world of sport, said:
"when something looks easy to do, it's generally because you are watching an
expert." He continued, "RSL has made the production of 2000 units seem easy
but we the customer are under no illusion how much dedication, attention to
detail, good programme management, and teamwork it takes to work continuously
for six years and continue to keep within the costs and schedules agreed at
the start of the contract."
To highlight the importance of the GAS-1 technology produced by RSL,
Captain Lopez reminded the audience of how they may be a 'user' of GPS without
even knowing it and cited examples of daily use such as mobile communications.
He asked them to imagine how their lives might change if such facilities where
suddenly not available and then, he suggested, they would begin to have an
understanding of how important the GAS-1 GPS Anti-Jam system is, especially to
the military.
Developed by RSL, GAS-1 is a revolutionary Global Positioning System (GPS)
Anti jam antenna system which is able to recognise sources of electrical
interference. By adjusting the way in which the system receives the GPS
satellite signals it can reject interference, allowing the navigation
equipment to function safely, accurately and efficiently. In military use
this allows operations to be carried out with greater accuracy and less risk.
Raytheon Systems Limited, the UK-based subsidiary of Raytheon Company,
employs over 1900 people throughout the country. The company is a major
supplier to the UK Ministry of Defence and has won programmes such as ASTOR
(Airborne Stand-Off Radar) and SIFF (Successor Identification Friend or Foe).
As either prime or as a team member, RSL is involved in bids for other
programmes such as the Royal Navy's Future Carrier (CVF) and the RAF's
Precision Guided Bomb. RSL also designs, develops and manufactures ATC radar,
identification systems and anti-jam navigation systems. It has a software
engineering facility and is a specialist supplier of semiconductors and power
modules, manufacturing complex electronic systems, sub-systems and assemblies.
