Highly Scalable and Reliable Foundation Built on Java Technology Standards
Provides Rich Application Development
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Sun-Netscape Alliance
(Alliance) today announced the iPlanet(TM) Application Server 6.0 software,
providing a rich application development platform based on the Java 2
Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) standard and fulfilling the Alliance's
promise to deliver a single next-generation application server for companies
deploying large, transactional Web sites to compete in today's exploding Net
Economy.
Anticipating J2EE certification later this month, the iPlanet Application
Server 6.0 software offers all the benefits of the open Java technology
standard combined with a heritage of market-leading deployment capabilities
and backwards compatibility for Sun NetDynamics(TM) and Netscape Application
Server applications. The product is designed to provide seamless migration for
applications that support core technologies of J2EE and also integrates key
features of Sun and Netscape applications and tools already in use by
customers such as AXA Sun Life, Cable and Wireless HKT, E*TRADE, First Union,
France Telecom, National Discount Brokers, Oakley, PayMyBills.com, and Visteon
Automotive Systems.
"We've envisioned success designing with the J2EE specification and look
forward to deploying the iPlanet Application Server," said Bob Whyte, chief
technology officer of PayMyBills.com. "The Alliance's value-added approach to
the specification promises to provide exactly what we've been looking for -- a
solution that meets our e-commerce requirements for reliability and
performance that is optimized for the emerging Java standards."
iPlanet Application Server 6.0 software provides the high performance,
high availability, legacy integration and manageability capabilities that
enterprises need to build and deploy massively scalable, mission-critical
Internet applications. The product uses results caching and sophisticated load
balancing to enhance the scalability and performance of JavaServer Pages(TM)
(JSP) technology, Java servlets and Enterprise JavaBeans(TM) (EJB) component
architecture. This yields significant performance improvements. For example,
the iPlanet Application Server's implementation of JSP technology offers a 30
percent performance improvement over a standard implementation of JSP
technology due to special caching techniques. Customer-proven failover
capabilities have also been extended to EJB components and Java technology
clients using RMI/IIOP.
"iPlanet Application Server 6.0 software is at the heart of our e-commerce
solutions," said Stuart Wells, senior vice president of infrastructure
products for the Sun-Netscape Alliance. "As the Internet continues to grow, it
is vital that companies are able to provide fast, uninterrupted service and
support for millions of users. iPlanet Application Server 6.0 software
delivers the right combination of middleware infrastructure, Web capabilities,
integration services and tools for creating success in the Net Economy. No
other platform compares with the breadth of choice or the strength of
offering."
iPlanet Application Server 6.0 software includes features and
functionality such as:
-- A broad range of application server tools -- including Forte(TM) for
Java, Community Edition software. The product leverages industry-leading tools
from Sun and Netscape to provide an exceptional environment to build the new
applications based on J2EE. iPlanet Application Server 6.0 software fully
supports J2EE container managed persistence/object relational
(CMP/OR) mapping and management. For development teams more comfortable with
IDEs such as Symantec Visual Cafe and Inprise Jbuilder, iPlanet Application
Server 6.0 software also closely integrates with those environments, as well
as leverages capabilities from products such as Macromedia Dream Weaver for
HTML editing. The platform also provides direct access to the application
programming interface (APIs), without the need of a tool intermediary.
-- A broad range of scalable and reliable integration services -- unlock
the power of existing information assets and the entire value chain for
Internet and e-commerce initiatives. A variety of products and suites bring
together back-end and back-office assets, the information assets of partners,
suppliers and customers outside the firewall, and use business process to
seamlessly integrate everything in one application solution.
"We're pleased to include the Sun-Netscape Alliance among our list of
industry-leading supporters for the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition," said
Rich Green, vice president, Java Software Development, Sun Microsystems.
"Through its unique implementation of enterprise technologies key to J2EE, the
iPlanet Application Server 6.0 delivers what businesses need today to execute
on a successful e-commerce strategy."
Pricing and Availability
iPlanet Application Server 6.0 software is expected to be available for
development in January, and for full deployment in March of 2000. Pricing for
the product is expected to be $35,000 per CPU.
