BOSTON, Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Edens & Avant, the nation's leading private
retail real estate company, is pleased to announce the grand opening on
December 8 of the Super Stop & Shop at South Bay in Boston, part of the
Company's $40 million expansion of the shopping center.
Stop & Shop moved to the 75,000 square-foot store from a smaller space at
the center to provide a broader spectrum of products and services to
customers.
"We're very excited about our new South Bay store," said Stop & Shop's
Executive Vice President of Sales and Operations, Bill Cummings. "This new
store will offer shoppers the very latest in merchandising and customer
services, and we look forward to serving the local community and continuing to
build upon our reputation as a good corporate citizen in the area," he
continued.
South Bay is located between Massachusetts Avenue, Allstate Road and
Southampton Street and draws heavily from the bordering South Boston, Roxbury
and North Dorchester neighborhoods. The Center is prominently viewed and
adjacent to the Southeast Expressway.
The Super Stop & Shop Grand Opening is the culmination of a two-year
collaborative effort between the City of Boston, local neighborhood
organizations, Stop & Shop and Edens & Avant -- all focused on providing more
retail options in an aesthetically pleasing center.
"What we set out to do with the South Bay expansion was get in front of
the people who shop there and those people entrenched in the long-term vision
for development in Boston to let them tell us what they wanted," said
Elizabeth Furnelli, Edens & Avant Vice President, Development - Northeast.
"Our goal was to listen and produce results. With the help of Mayor Menino's
office, the Boston Redevelopment Authority and the crucial neighborhood
organizations, we've worked hard to deliver effectively on this goal."
The expansion project began when Edens & Avant acquired an 8-acre
industrial parcel along Massachusetts Avenue, adjacent to the existing 46-acre
center. The abandoned warehouse buildings, previously occupied by Agar Supply
Company, were razed in preparation for Stop & Shop's redevelopment.
Upon completion of the expansion in 2006, the center will total 540,000
square feet. The renovation includes new retailers Circuit City and Bed, Bath
& Beyond in the former Stop & Shop space and Famous Footwear coming in
adjacent to the new Stop & Shop. Applebee's and Olive Garden will open along
with a gas station and Bank of America.
Extensive landscape and parking lot changes are underway, including
several new pedestrian crosswalks. In partnership with the City of Boston,
Edens & Avant is reconfiguring the Massachusetts Avenue entrance.
"We eagerly anticipate the overall South Bay project completion next year.
We are thrilled to set the tone with this fantastic new Stop & Shop and remain
extremely grateful to the city and the neighborhoods for their thoughtful
suggestions and involvement in the process," commented Furnelli.
Edens & Avant develops, owns and operates neighborhood shopping places in
primary markets throughout the East Coast, including 33 in the Northeast.
Focusing on innovative development and redevelopment together with key
acquisitions in urban areas, Edens & Avant has built an overall portfolio of
more than 170 retail centers in 19 states. The Company has Regional
