Tyson Begins Hiring Production Workers for Sherman Plant; New Operation Expected to Eventually Employ 1,600 People

    SHERMAN, Texas, Dec. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Tyson Foods, Inc.
(NYSE: TSN) has started taking applications for many of the anticipated 1,600
jobs that will be created by the opening of a new meat production plant in
Sherman, Texas, company officials reported today.
    Tyson has been converting the former Oscar Mayer plant in Sherman into a
state-of-the art case ready beef and pork operation.  The company already has
50 management workers on staff and beginning this week will start hiring some
of the more than 1,000 production workers who will be needed for the first
phase of production, which is set to begin in early February 2006.  The rest
of the workforce will be added as the plant increases production.
    "We're nearing the final stages of plant renovations and are ready to
start hiring and training the production workers we'll need to successfully
begin operations," said Mike Gerleman, manager of the Sherman plant.  "We're
anxious to put our team together and begin production at what eventually
should be the largest case ready meat plant in the country."
    The new operation will use beef and pork from other Tyson plants to
produce packages of steak, roasts, chops, ground beef and other items that are
ready for retail grocers to place directly into the meat case.  Most of the
jobs will involve cutting, trimming and packaging product.  Other positions
will include box handling and storage, maintenance, quality assurance and
production management.
    Production workers will start at $9.00 an hour, move to $9.50 after three
months, $10.00 after six months and can go on to earn as much as $11 an hour.
Top maintenance pay is $16 an hour.  Benefits include medical, dental and
vision coverage, a 401(k) retirement savings program and a stock purchase plan
that receive matching contributions from the company, and paid vacations and
holidays.
    Beginning December 6, Tyson will take employment applications Monday
through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the following locations:

     *  Sherman:  Midway Mall 4800 Texoma Parkway
     *  Bonham:  South Annex, 210 South Main
     *  Gainesville:  Gainesville Factory Shops, Suite 201, 4321 North I-35
     *  Van Alstyne:  Grayson Co., South Campus, Stephens Street

    Applications will also be taken at the following Workforce Texoma offices,
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.:

     *  Denison:  2415 South Austin St. (Suite 105)
     *  Gainesville: 900 North Grand Ave. (Suite 103)
     *  Bonham:  1205 East Sam Rayburn Drive
