WILKES-BARRE, Pa., Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Enterprises, Inc.
regrettably announces the unexpected death Saturday of Kenneth L. Pollock,
Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Mr. Pollock had been a member of the Pennsylvania Enterprises, Inc. Board
of Directors since 1972. He served as Chairman of the Board and Executive
Committee of PEI and PG Energy since 1987. He also served as President and
CEO of PEI and Pennsylvania Gas & Water Co. from March to August 1991.
During his 26 years of guidance and leadership, PEI has divested itself of
its water operations and grown and diversified into an energy and
energy-services provider in a large area of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Pollock's early business interests included the operation of a small
barbecue stand in Berwick and a coal-hauling firm. In the early 1960's he
acquired Susquehanna Coal Co. He was director and sole stockholder of
Susquehanna Coal Co. and Ken L. Pollock, Inc., Hunlock Creek.
A former minor league baseball player, Mr. Pollock had a life-long love of
the game. He was a former general partner and Board of Directors member of
the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball club. At various times Mr. Pollock attempted
to purchase the Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Red Sox.
He was named to Who's Who in America's 1990-1991 edition and was a former
board member of United Penn Bank, King's College, Mercy Hospital,
Wilkes-Barre; and Mill Memorial Library, Nanticoke.
An avid Penn State Nittany Lions football fan and Penn State supporter, he
received the 1995 Distinguished Honorary Alumni Award. He was a charter
member of the Penn State Mountain Laurel Society and a member of the Penn
State University National Development Council, the Campaign for the Joe
Paterno Library Committee; the Mount Nittany Society; the Penn State Hayfield
Society, Wilkes-Barre. He was member emeritus of the Penn State Advisory
Board, Wilkes-Barre.
Mr. Pollock's awards and memberships were as expansive as his generosity
and philanthropic activities.
Education and children's charities were the principal causes Mr. Pollock
supported. He established the Ken L. Pollock Scholarships at Penn State's
Lehman Campus, King's College and Wilkes University. In recognition of
Mr. Pollock's support, the children's wing of the Osterhout Library,
Wilkes-Barre, and the dining hall at the Penn Mountain Boy Scouts' Camp
Acahela are named in his honor.
Mr. Pollock's generosity also helped build the Ken Pollock Apartments of
Ecumenical Enterprises, a senior citizens' apartment complex in Glen Lyon.
Mr. Pollock was inducted into the Junior Achievement Northeastern
Pennsylvania Business Hall of Fame in 1995. Other awards presented to Mr.
Pollock included the 1981-1982 Citizen of the Year Award of the Hunlock Creek
Lions Club, and the Pacesetter and Mountain Pathfinder Awards of the
Pennsylvania Boy Scouts of America and numerous other citations and awards.
He was a member of Nanticoke Lodge #541 of the Free and Accepted Masons
and was a 33rd Degree member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite at the
Caldwell Consistory, Bloomsburg. He also was a member of numerous civic,
community and industry clubs and organizations.
In addition to his many businesses, sports and philanthropic interests,
Mr. Pollock was an intensely private man who was dedicated to his family and
delighted in his grandchildren.
His widow is the former Marion G. Gearhart. The couple celebrated their
53rd anniversary on March 24. He also is survived by a son, Kenneth M.
Pollock, a daughter, Connie Rado, and grandchildren, Stephanie, Whitney and
Ken Pollock, and Tricia Rado, all of Dallas; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ben R. Pollock.
Private funeral services will be conducted Tuesday. Friends may call
Monday, 7 to 9 p.m., at the Clarke Piatt Funeral Home Inc., Sunset Lake Road,
Hunlock Creek. Interment, Oak Lawn Cemetery, Wilkes-Barre.

Methodist Church.
