American Stores Company Announces Quarterly Dividend
 
    SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The Board of Directors of
American Stores Company (NYSE: ASC) today declared a quarterly cash dividend
on American Stores Company common stock of 9 cents per common share.  The
dividend is payable January 4, 1999, to shareholders of record on
December 18, 1998.
