Mattel Children's Foundation Fulfills $25 Million Commitment to Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA

State-of-the-Art Hospital to Be Completed in 2006

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Mattel Children's
Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Mattel, Inc. (NYSE: MAT), today announced
the fulfillment of its multi-year, $25 million commitment to the Mattel
Children's Hospital at UCLA with the presentation of $5 million to Dr. Edward
R.B. McCabe, physician-in-chief of Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA.
"The Mattel Children's Foundation is proud of the role it has played in
the development of the Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA," said Robert A.
Eckert, chairman and chief executive officer of Mattel. "The Foundation was
created to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children in need and
through the Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA, we know that our impact
reaches to the very heart of families facing tremendous challenges every
single day. We look forward to continuing a tradition of working together and
extending a hand to those in need."
Thanks to the Mattel Children's Foundation, the new Mattel Children's
Hospital at UCLA currently under construction as a "hospital within a
hospital" will feature private rooms with a day bed so parents can comfortably
room-in with their child. The hospital will have an Inpatient Unit, Pediatric
Intensive Care Unit and a level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit within
100,000 square feet of space when it is completed in 2006. The Hospital is
already recognized worldwide as a leader in organ transplants, neurology,
nephrology, immunology, cardiology, molecular biology and genetics, pediatric
pain and hematology/oncology.
In 1998, when the commitment was first announced, it was the largest
single gift made to any children's hospital by a corporation or corporate
foundation.
"The support of the Mattel Children's Foundation has been invaluable to
creating our new world-class facility," stated Dr. Edward McCabe. "Our
relationship with the Mattel Children's Foundation extends beyond our
magnificent new structure and has blossomed into a vibrant partnership that
includes Mattel employee volunteers, toy donations and other exciting
activities."
Additional information about new commitments and partnerships made by the
Mattel Children's Foundation, including the launch of an online grantmaking
program, will be available on the corporate website at http://www.Mattel.com in
January 2005.
