PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- William J. (Bill) Avery, Chairman and
CEO of Crown Cork & Seal, joined the Rohm and Haas Company (NYSE: ROH) Board
of Directors earlier today.
    Under Avery's leadership, Philadelphia-based Crown Cork & Seal has grown
to become the world's premier packaging company.  The Company produces metal
and plastic packaging products for the food, beverage, household product and
personal care industries, among others, with operations in 59 countries.

    Avery began his career with Crown Cork & Seal in 1959 as a management
trainee. He held positions of increasing responsibility in manufacturing and
sales. In 1976, he was appointed Senior Vice President and became President
and Chief Operating Officer four years later. In 1989, Avery took on the role
of Chief Executive Officer and was elected Chairman of the company the
following year.
    With the addition of Mr. Avery, Rohm and Haas Company's Board of Directors
now consists of 15 members.
