SPX to Provide Critical Products to South Africa's Medupi Power Station

                   Company Awarded $235 Million Contract
                    Products Will Help Reduce Emissions

    CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SPX Corporation
(NYSE: SPW) today announced that its thermal equipment and services
affiliate has been awarded a $235 million contract with Hitachi Power
Africa (Pty) Ltd , a subsidiary of Hitachi Power Europe GmbH (HPE) to
provide critical products for South Africa's new Medupi power station.

    Eskom, South Africa's state-owned utility company, recently awarded a
contract to Hitachi Power Europe and Hitachi Power Africa to manufacture,
build and supply steam generators for the Medupi power station. Medupi will
be the first coal-fired power plant to be built in the country in 20 years.
It will be located near Lephalale, in the Limpopo province. Eskom expects
the power station to begin supplying power to the national grid in the next
four to five years.

    Under the $235 million contract, SPX's business will supply Balcke
Duerr branded pulse jet fabric filters and air preheaters, and manufacture
pressure parts for six 800 MW boilers.

preheaters will help reduce emissions and enhance the productivity of
