Raytheon Teams With Northrop Grumman to Develop Modular, Scalable Radar Technology for Airborne Surveillance and Reconnaissance

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Dec. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company
(NYSE: RTNA, RTNB) and Northrop Grumman Corporation will jointly design and
develop an advanced technology Modular, Scalable Radar (MSR) system to perform
the airborne ground surveillance mission. Work on the MSR system will be
performed under a contract recently awarded by the U.S. Air Force to Northrop
Grumman for the Multi-Platform Radar Technology Insertion Program (MP-RTIP).
Raytheon's initial share of the contract is $106 million.
Raytheon will leverage its expertise from other programs such as the U.S.
Air Force's F-15 and F-22 advanced array radars, the F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet
and the Joint Strike Fighter to design Active Electronically Scanned Array
(AESA) sub-arrays for assembly into antennas of various sizes. The company
will also develop back-end components for a multi-channel receiver/exciter
sub-system. Software for the MP-RTIP radar will be based on algorithms
developed by both companies, with Raytheon drawing on experience from the U-2
ASARS II and the Global Hawk Integrated Sensor Suite.
"Bringing both companies together to design and build a modular, scalable
radar system will enable the Department of Defense to leverage its substantial
previous investments in radar technology and obtain a new high-performance
radar capability at very low risk," said Bob Iversen, vice president and
general manager of Raytheon's Surveillance and Reconnaissance Systems business
unit. "With its modular architecture, the new MP-RTIP radar will be adaptable
to multiple airborne platforms thus providing the war fighter with greater
flexibility to meet emerging mission requirements without duplication of
investments in technology."
Under the provisions of the contract, Raytheon and Northrop Grumman will
supply three radar systems for integration into three airframes: The Global
Hawk unmanned aerial reconnaissance system; a Wide Area Surveillance platform;
and, a NATO Advanced TransAtlantic Radar platform.

Sensors Systems Sector (ES3), commented, "We look forward to working with each
other to deliver to the U.S. Air Force the world's finest radar technology
embodied in the MP-RTIP."
